A tall, robed woman rises at the right, while a younger red-haired figure sits below with clasped hands and an ivy wreath. Around them, white lilies spread in profusion, their slender stems and pale flowers forming a living screen against a softly modulated blue-grey ground. The composition is serene but not static: upward-growing plants, cascading hair and long folds of fabric create a gentle vertical rhythm.
Mucha was a Czech artist whose posters and decorative designs became closely identified with the visual culture of the Belle Époque. His idealised female figures, sinuous contours and elaborate botanical settings helped define a particularly recognisable form of Art Nouveau, one in which ornament structures the composition rather than merely embellishing it. Here he turns that vocabulary towards Christian imagery. The lily, traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary and with purity, allows the religious subject to merge naturally with Mucha’s abiding interest in flowers, pattern and feminine grace.
A closer look
The seated figure occupies the lower left and central foreground, dressed almost entirely in white. Her cross-legged pose gives her a compact, grounded presence beneath the taller woman, while her hands meet quietly in front of her body. Fine floral details appear along the sleeves and hem of her gown, preventing the pale fabric from becoming an undifferentiated mass. Her warm red hair and the fresh greens of the wreath provide restrained accents within the otherwise cool, luminous palette.
Above and behind her, the standing figure introduces a sense of elevation. Long hair descends in softly highlighted strands, echoed by the fluid fall of the robes. Mucha balances these sweeping curves with the sharper, more articulated forms of the lilies: narrow leaves, upright stalks and open white blooms. Some flowers press towards the foreground, while others recede into the pale atmosphere, creating depth without strong shadows or strict perspective.
The colour is notably delicate. Creamy whites, soft green, blush pink and pale blue are held together by fine contour lines and muted tonal transitions. The strongest contrast is not between light and darkness but between textures: smooth skin against patterned cloth, flowing hair against crisp foliage, and broad areas of pale drapery against the intricate network of stems. Even small details—the subtly indicated veins of petals, variations within the ivy leaves and touches of floral embroidery—contribute to the work’s unusually hushed richness.

Art Nouveau sought to dissolve boundaries between fine art, graphic design and the decorative arts, often drawing its energy from natural forms. Mucha’s work exemplifies this approach: figures, flowers, garments and background are conceived as parts of a single ornamental system. Although he became especially celebrated for poster designs, his visual language could also accommodate allegorical, historical and devotional subjects. In Madonna of the Lilies, the familiar curves and floral abundance of his secular imagery are made quieter and more contemplative.
The work’s appeal lies in this meeting of tradition and modern design. Its Marian associations are immediately legible through the title and lilies, yet the arrangement belongs unmistakably to the early twentieth century: closely cropped, asymmetrically balanced and governed by rhythmic line. Mucha gives the devotional subject neither architectural grandeur nor dramatic narrative. Instead, he builds an atmosphere from pale colour, poised gestures and the repeated upward movement of flowers.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
