Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s 1813 study of Linaria pauciflora, Plate 18 from Description des plantes rares cultivees a Malmaison et a Navarre, gives a slender flowering plant an almost calligraphic presence. Rising through a broad field of warm, pale beige, its fine green stems branch lightly towards clusters of pink and purple flowers. The arrangement is asymmetrical but poised: the plant leans and opens towards the upper right, creating a gentle upward rhythm without sacrificing the clear, analytical presentation expected of botanical illustration.
The plate belongs to a publication devoted to rare plants cultivated at Malmaison and Navarre, and reflects the sophisticated horticultural culture of the Napoleonic era. Redouté worked at a moment when botanical images served several overlapping worlds: scientific study, gardening, collecting and elite patronage. Unusual plants were examined for their structures and growing habits, but they were also prized as evidence of cultivation and connoisseurship. Redouté’s particular achievement was to reconcile these demands, making specimens botanically legible while retaining their delicacy, colour and individual character.
A closer look
The eye first meets a network of narrow stems and spindly leaves near the lower centre. Rather than forming a dense mass, the foliage is separated carefully against the empty ground, allowing individual leaves, junctions and changes of direction to remain visible. Subtle tonal variations prevent the greens from appearing uniform: some passages are fresh and light, while others deepen around stems and folded surfaces. Fine pale lines trace through the leaves, suggesting veins without burdening their fragile forms.
Higher in the composition, the restrained greens give way to small blossoms in softened pinks and purplish tones. Their petals shift from stronger colour near the centres to paler edges, while the buds carry a more finely textured appearance. The flowers are modest in scale, yet Redouté distinguishes their structures with close attention. A few blooms extend towards the upper-right edge, balancing the longer sweep of the stems below and giving the specimen the appearance of active growth rather than a rigidly diagrammatic sample.
Much of the plate’s refinement lies in its use of space. The plant occupies only part of the page, and the generous unmarked ground makes every branching stem easier to follow. There is little suggestion of habitat or atmospheric depth; instead, the specimen appears isolated for examination. At the lower centre, the neatly written label “Linaria Pauciflora.” anchors the composition, its horizontal line providing a quiet counterweight to the plant’s vertical ascent.
Context and significance
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His reputation rests not simply on accuracy, but on an unusual ability to organise botanical information pictorially. Stems remain readable, leaves are turned to reveal their forms, and flowers are distributed so that repetition never becomes monotony. The result is observation shaped by an exceptionally refined sense of composition.
In this plate, that balance is especially apparent. Linaria pauciflora is not made grander or more abundant than it is; its sparse flowering and attenuated growth become the source of the design’s elegance. The quiet palette, finely differentiated plant structures and expansive background preserve the character of a rare cultivated specimen while demonstrating why Redouté’s work has remained central to the history of botanical art.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
