Continua a leggereLe Grain d’Or (1900–1920), credited to the Belgian artist Lith J. Goffin and dated 1900, turns a convivial exchange between two men into a vigorous beverage advertisement. One, white-bearded and bespectacled beneath a yellowish hat, presents a brown bottle; his dark-haired companion leans in from the right, grinning and pointing towards it. Their animated faces converge around the product, while warm ochres, browns and cream are sharply set against a field of blue.
The poster belongs to a period in which commercial printing was becoming an increasingly conspicuous part of European urban visual culture. Advertisers needed to communicate at a glance, and Goffin’s design adopts the bold silhouettes, decorative lettering and concentrated colour contrasts associated with turn-of-the-century poster art. Its stylised forms suggest the influence of Art Nouveau and related modern graphic tendencies, although the emphasis here is less on sinuous ornament than on character, humour and immediate recognition.
A closer look
The two figures occupy almost the entire vertical composition, leaving little room for distraction. At upper centre, the older man’s pale beard, spectacles and brightly lit face stand out against his earthy clothing. The second figure enters from the upper right in a black cap, his bent arm and pointing finger directing attention back towards the bottle. Their poses form a compact circuit of glances and gestures: face, hand, label and title are bound together in a deliberately efficient visual sequence.
Although the figures are broadly drawn, small details give them presence. Subtle shading describes folds in their coats, while strong outlines keep each shape legible. The bottle’s white label carries ornamental flourishes that distinguish it from the darker glass, making it a bright focal point between the men. Behind them, the blue shifts from a deeper tone above to a paler one below, with faint, cloud-like wisps near the upper left. This cool backdrop intensifies the golden and chestnut hues of the foreground without introducing elaborate spatial depth.
Typography anchors the lower part of the design. “LE GRAIN D’OR” appears in emphatic golden capitals, its colour echoing both the product’s name—“the golden grain”—and the warm palette of the figures. Beneath it, the French slogan “VIEUX SYSTÈME SANS RIVAL” is smaller but still clearly articulated, presenting the drink through the language of established method and unrivalled quality. At lower right, the more discreet wording “PH. BAUDUYN” and “BRUXELLES” situates the advertisement within a Brussels commercial setting. The hierarchy is unmistakable: human comedy attracts attention, the bottle holds it, and the lettering supplies the name.
Context and significance
At the turn of the twentieth century, the modern poster brought illustration, lettering and advertising into unusually close partnership. Rather than offering a realistic scene, Le Grain d’Or compresses its message into memorable graphic signs: two amiable faces, one prominently displayed bottle and a product name large enough to register immediately. Its flat colour and forceful contours reflect the practical demands of public advertising while retaining the decorative assurance of period print design.
What gives Goffin’s composition its particular appeal is the way it makes sociability itself part of the sales message. The beverage is not isolated as a still-life object; it is embedded in a moment of camaraderie, recommendation and shared amusement. That combination of theatrical expression and economical design makes Le Grain d’Or an engaging record of early modern advertising, when commercial imagery could be at once direct, playful and graphically sophisticated.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
