Across a broad, gently undulating landscape, scattered figures sit, recline and bend close to the ground beneath tall trees and an expansive blue sky. The scene has an Arcadian calm, yet its construction is already animated by colour: clear blues and vivid greens are punctuated by white clothing, pale flowers and warmer passages of earth.
Macke was still developing his artistic language when he made this painting. It predates both the mature, luminous style for which he became known and his later association with Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based group that helped reshape German modernism. Classical figures offered a subject rooted in European artistic tradition, but here they are not arranged as the protagonists of a grand historical drama. Instead, they seem absorbed into the landscape itself. This blending of an idealised theme with simplified forms, visible brushwork and increasingly assertive colour makes the painting particularly revealing as an early work.
A closer look
The horizontal composition unfolds in distinct but gently connected layers. In the central foreground, a figure on all fours forms an unusual focal point: the pale upper garment and blue trousers stand out sharply against the surrounding grass. Curving strokes around the body give the vegetation a rippling movement, while tiny white flowers scattered near the lower edge reward closer attention. Rather than isolating the figure, Macke binds it to the terrain through repeated greens and loosely suggested shadows.
A rolling rise divides the foreground from the more distant ground, creating depth without relying on elaborate detail. Other figures appear farther back in relaxed poses, some seated or reclining, their light and blue clothing merging with patches of sky and foliage. This dispersal guides the eye laterally across the scene; there is no single emphatic action, only a sequence of quiet human presences encountered among the slopes.
Above them, the trees at the left rise in slender verticals, their crowns built from varied notes of light and deeper green. They counterbalance the open sky to the right, where stylised clouds drift across blue that shifts subtly in intensity. The strongest visual tension comes from this meeting of cool sky, saturated foliage and warmer brown earth. Brushstrokes remain evident throughout, especially in the grass and leaves, lending energy to a subject otherwise characterised by stillness.

Made when Macke was still a teenager, Landschaft mit antiken Figuren belongs to a formative moment rather than the fully resolved modernism of his later work. Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
