Slender stems, reproductive parts, a pale elongated leaf, seeds and a pod-like form are distributed vertically across a light ground. The generous spaces between them are crucial: each element remains distinct, while the restrained greens, earthy browns and soft golden yellows give the plate a quiet visual unity.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists working in France around the turn of the nineteenth century. His reputation rests on an unusual balance of scientific legibility and graceful draughtsmanship, qualities that would also distinguish his celebrated studies of lilies and roses. Created for La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, this plate belongs to a culture in which botanical illustration was both a means of classification and a form of visual education. It translates minute plant anatomy into an orderly sequence that could be studied, compared and remembered.
A closer look
The composition unfolds from top to bottom rather like a cabinet of specimens. Near the upper centre, a long golden filament establishes the principal vertical axis, while smaller curved structures branch away from it. At upper right, a compact floral form curls around a rounded centre; on the opposite side, another fine stalk terminates in small spherical shapes. Their differing silhouettes are made immediately comprehensible by the uncluttered background.
Across the middle of the plate, the contrast between line and colour becomes especially delicate. A pale leaf extends laterally on the left, its subtle veins traced with exceptional economy. To the right, a narrow green stem rises towards yellow anthers, whose clustered forms provide one of the most concentrated passages of colour. The structure is precise without becoming rigid: slight bends in the stalk and carefully modulated shading preserve the sense of something observed from life.
At the lower centre, a small group of oval seeds forms a compact counterweight to the elongated specimens above. Tiny shadows give these forms a surprising degree of volume. A thicker, pod-like specimen at lower right introduces another scale and texture, with closely placed marks describing its rounded surface. Throughout, fine hatching and stippled detail articulate veining, curvature and texture, yet the plate never feels crowded. Its visual rhythm depends as much upon intervals of empty space as upon the specimens themselves.

Botanical plates of this kind occupied a productive territory between art and scientific enquiry. Before photography, the illustrator had to select and clarify the features most useful to the reader, sometimes separating a plant into component parts rather than presenting only its outward appearance. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
