Herman Bartsch’s G. Krueger, bock beer, created in 1887, turns a beer advertisement into a piece of exuberant visual theatre. A large brown goat rises on its hind legs beside a wooden barrel and foaming mug, its animated pose giving the composition an immediate, almost comic energy. Around this central mascot, forceful lettering announces “G. KRUEGER” and “BOCK BEER”, while the date appears in emphatic black numerals on the barrel. Illustration and typography work together with unusual directness: the animal catches the eye, then the words deliver the message.

The goat is more than a lively advertising character. Its presence draws upon a long-standing visual association between bock beer and the billy goat, encouraged by the German word Bock, which can refer to both the style of strong beer and a male goat. Bartsch therefore gives the product a memorable pictorial identity without relying on text alone. The poster belongs to a late nineteenth-century commercial culture in which richly illustrated advertisements were becoming increasingly central to brand recognition, combining decorative display with the need to communicate quickly in busy public settings.

A closer look

The composition is vertically organised but far from static. The goat occupies much of the foreground, its raised body and turned head creating a strong upward movement towards the barrel. Dark brown fur is modelled with fine, light-catching strokes, particularly around the animal’s face and shoulders, while the pale background keeps its silhouette clear. The shallow setting concentrates attention on the encounter between mascot and merchandise rather than suggesting a fully described scene.

Bartsch rewards closer attention with an abundance of contrasting textures. The goat’s irregular coat is set against the curved staves and visible grain of the barrel; nearby, the mug’s smooth body and froth provide a lighter accent. The foam has a slightly uneven edge, giving the drink a sense of freshness, and a tiny emblem appears on the vessel itself. A delicate vine, with small leaves and curling tendrils, softens the heavier forms and introduces an ornamental note associated with the ingredients and imagery of brewing.

The typography forms part of the illustration rather than sitting apart from it. “G. KRUEGER” occupies the upper portion in bold decorative capitals, framing the mascot from above, while the much larger “BOCK BEER” anchors the lower edge within an embellished border. The restricted combination of warm brown, dense black and pale cream establishes a clear hierarchy across the poster. Even the barrel becomes a surface for display, carrying “1887” prominently at its centre. In the lower right, the visible inscription “HERMANN BARTSCH, 54 Beekman S.C.N.Y.” functions as a small maker’s credit beneath the far louder language of the brand.

Context and significance

By the 1880s, posters and other illustrated commercial designs were helping manufacturers distinguish their goods through recognisable names, mascots and graphic motifs. Bartsch’s design demonstrates how effectively these elements could be compressed into a single image. The goat supplies humour and instant recognition; the barrel and beer mug identify the product; and the oversized words remain legible even before the finer details are noticed.

What makes the poster especially engaging is the balance between salesmanship and careful draughtsmanship. Its message is unequivocal, yet the intricate treatment of fur, wood grain, foam and foliage gives it a decorative richness beyond simple signage. The result is a vivid example of late Victorian advertising at its most characterful: bold enough to command attention, but sufficiently detailed to sustain a longer look.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
