Two figures command the central foreground: one upright, the other partially reclined, their contrasting poses suggesting a moment of exchange or separation without resolving it into a precise narrative. Nearby, a horse and rider introduce a second current of movement. Stark dark forms, pale open ground and sweeping organic lines give the scene an unusually graphic intensity.
Macke was one of the leading figures of German Expressionism and a key member of Der Blaue Reiter, the loose association of artists who sought new freedoms in colour and form during the years before the First World War. Created shortly before his death in 1914, Farewell belongs to the mature phase of a remarkably compressed career. Macke is particularly associated with luminous colour, simplified silhouettes and rhythmic, interlocking shapes; here, those modernist interests are concentrated into an austere tonal language whose emotional force comes from contrast, gesture and spatial tension.
A closer look
The eye is drawn first to the central figures, whose bodies are described through broad, clean-edged areas rather than closely modelled detail. Fine marks indicate faces and anatomy, but the dominant impression is one of silhouette and pose. The standing figure rises emphatically through the composition, while the lower figure establishes a counterweight close to the ground. This difference in height gives their encounter a charged asymmetry, appropriate to the unresolved implications of the title.
At the lower left, the mounted horse expands the scene beyond the central pair. Its flowing mane and the angle of the rider create a sense of passage, as though the composition has caught several actions at once. The horse’s curved contours also answer the stylised leaves scattered near the lower edge, linking animal movement with the surrounding vegetation. Rather than receding through subtle tonal transitions, space is constructed by overlap and scale: figures occupy the foreground, while the pale field behind them remains deliberately open.
Across the upper portion, abstracted foliage and branch-like curves form a loose canopy. Some lines arc above the figures with a windblown rhythm, preventing the light background from becoming inert. Deep blacks and bright whites dominate, with restrained greys softening selected passages. The near absence of gradual shading makes every contour conspicuous: a bent limb, the horse’s neck and the curl of a leaf each contributes to the composition’s momentum. Macke’s simplification is not a loss of visual incident, but a way of making each shape carry greater weight.
Context and significance
German Expressionism was never a single, uniform style. Within Der Blaue Reiter, artists explored heightened colour, abstraction and the expressive possibilities of line in markedly different ways. Macke’s work often remained closely connected to recognisable experience—figures, animals and landscapes—even as he reorganised those subjects into increasingly independent arrangements of colour and form. Farewell reflects that balance: its elements remain legible, yet they operate equally as dark masses, pale intervals and curving rhythms.
The title lends the encounter a contemplative gravity, but the painting resists a fixed explanation. Its effect lies instead in the tension between stillness and departure: the central exchange appears suspended, while the horse, rider and animated foliage imply movement beyond it. That combination of human intimacy, formal economy and restless energy gives Farewell its distinctive place within Macke’s late work.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
