The cool, dark glass forms the poster’s visual anchor, while sprays of pink flowers soften its commercial geometry. Product, name and slogan are immediately legible, yet the asymmetrical arrangement keeps the design lively rather than merely instructional.
The poster belongs to the flourishing commercial culture of the Belle Époque, when European advertisers increasingly relied on strong colours, memorable typography and simplified forms to establish a recognisable brand identity. Designed to compete for attention in busy shops and public streets, such advertisements compressed persuasion into a few bold elements. Here, Elixir de Spa is presented not only as a drink but as a distinctly Belgian product: the claim “La Première Liqueur Belge” gives national distinction a prominent place within the sales message.
A closer look
The bottle rises through the centre of the composition, its broad body and narrow neck outlined crisply against the almost luminous ground. Subtle shading around the neck, together with the glint on the cork, lends it a degree of solidity without disturbing the poster’s predominantly flat graphic character. Its label contains a denser world of ornament and information, including the words “Marque de Fabrique” and “Distillateurs Liquoristes”. These small details reward close attention, contrasting with the instant impact of the larger design.
Across the upper section, “ÉLIXIR de SPA” appears in oversized red lettering. The difference in scale between the principal words and the smaller connecting text produces a clear visual rhythm, directing the eye first to the brand and then down towards the bottle. Red and orange accents intensify the warmth of the yellow background, while the bottle’s layered greens provide a cool counterweight. Brown touches in the cork and label prevent the palette from becoming overly uniform.
The floral embellishments are more than incidental decoration. Their fine pink outlines and curling green stems frame the bottle while interrupting the design’s rigid vertical structure. On one side they press towards, and appear to break, the thin dark border, introducing a note of playful irregularity. Elsewhere, the smaller inscription “SCHALTIN, PIERRY & CIE à SPA (BELGIQUE)” supplies the manufacturer and place, integrated into the composition in red rather than treated as detached information.

Turn-of-the-century beverage posters occupied a productive space between illustration, typography and modern marketing. Their task was to make a bottle recognisable from a distance and its name easy to retain. This anonymous designer achieves both through controlled exaggeration: the container is vastly enlarged, the background dispenses with any conventional setting, and the words become pictorial forms in their own right. The lack of narrative is deliberate in effect; everything serves the identity of Elixir de Spa.
At the same time, the decorative flowers, intricate label and varied lettering preserve the ornamental richness associated with Belle Époque visual culture. The result is a particularly clear record of a moment when consumer goods were acquiring carefully constructed public personalities. Bold enough to communicate at a glance and detailed enough to sustain closer inspection, the poster turns a single green bottle into an assertive emblem of Belgian commercial design.

Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.
We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
