Eagle Lake Viewed from Cadillac Mountain, Mount Desert Island, Maine (1850–60) by Frederic Edwin Church invites you into the luminous clarity of a Hudson River School landscape at the height of American Romanticism. Painted circa 1850–60, this study captures the elevated sweep from Cadillac Mountain across the still expanse of Eagle Lake, a view that embodies the period’s reverence for the sublime American wilderness. Church’s mastery of atmosphere and topography—his hallmark blend of poetic feeling with meticulous observation—suffuses the scene with a broad, panoramic calm.

Offered as a museum-quality fine art print, this piece is available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Rich pigment inks preserve the nuanced shifts of light, the crisp drawing, and the gentle textures of Church’s brushwork. Choose from multiple sizes with optional custom framing, matting, and margins. Personalization—such as a title plate or dedication—is available through The Unique Maps Co., and we can tailor dimensions or create a ready-to-hang, gallery-wrapped canvas on request.

Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) stands among the most celebrated painters of the Hudson River School, known for expansive vistas and an exacting eye for the effects of weather and light. A student of Thomas Cole, Church developed a distinctive approach that fused scientific attentiveness with a quietly dramatic sensibility. His landscapes—ranging from the coasts of New England to the Andes—shaped mid-19th-century American art and helped define how viewers saw the nation’s natural grandeur.

This particular study focuses on Mount Desert Island in present-day coastal Maine, looking from Cadillac Mountain across Eagle Lake. In the mid-1800s, such pristine views resonated with Romantic ideals and with a growing American identity tied to vast, unspoiled terrain. Church’s close observation of geology, water, and atmosphere reflects his belief that the wilderness was both a place of knowledge and of spiritual encounter. As a field study, it distills the essentials of the motif—the lay of the land, the mood of the sky—into a composition that feels immediate and lived.

Color and light do the eloquent work here: a dominant orange glow, softened by mellow yellows and grounded by pearly grays, suggests the hush of dawn or the burnish of late day. Cool notes of blue flicker in the water’s reflective sheen, while the sky moves in a gentle gradient, light to dark. Rounded hills guide the eye in a flowing rhythm to the lake’s silvered plane; a lone, upright tree anchors the foreground as a vertical counterpoint. Church’s brush is loose and expressive in the clouds and water, yet precise in the contours of the land, creating depth through finely tuned atmospheric perspective. The result is a serene, contemplative image—equally at home warming a living room, study, or lakeside retreat.

This fine art print makes a thoughtful gift for admirers of American landscape painting, lovers of Maine’s coast, hikers and sailors, and anyone drawn to the quiet drama of Romanticism. It’s perfect for housewarmings, weddings, Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or to celebrate a recent journey to Acadia and the heights of Cadillac Mountain.

If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind a different size, a different colour, a special frame then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.

You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
