Delhaize (1930–1940), an anonymous advertisement dating from the 1930s, arranges the pleasures of drink, fruit and good humour into a crisp piece of commercial theatre. At its centre, a smiling, fair-haired woman presents a bunch of dark purple grapes, while two imposing beverage bottles rise on either side of her. Rich reds and greens animate the design against a softly graded beige and pale-blue ground; above, the bold inscription ‘DELHAIZE FRÈRES & CIE “LE LION”’ establishes the retailer’s identity at a glance.

The poster belongs to an interwar culture in which retailers increasingly relied upon strong graphic identities to make their names familiar. Rather than offering elaborate narrative or extensive information, the design communicates through immediate associations: ripe fruit, colourful labels, an engaging human face and products placed prominently in the foreground. Its anonymous maker combines these elements with the streamlined directness characteristic of early twentieth-century advertising, when commercial illustration was becoming an increasingly visible part of food retail and urban life.

A closer look

The woman’s face provides the composition with its focal point. Her wavy hair catches the light, and her bright eyes and broad smile lend the scene an almost performative cheerfulness. A plaid shirt introduces a compact pattern of green, red and cream, echoing colours found elsewhere in the poster. Even the small bracelet at her wrist contributes a point of brightness. Her hands are carefully positioned around the dark grapes, which stand out against both her clothing and the paler cluster resting immediately below.

The two bottles act almost like architectural supports, framing the central figure while keeping the advertised beverages unmistakably prominent. On the lower left, the bottle marked ‘LAMBERTINI’ bears a label with a boat motif. Opposite it, ‘ST. MICHEL’ appears within a more ornate, multicoloured design. Their dark glass and decorative labels create a pleasing tension between substantial, simplified silhouettes and minute commercial detail. Although the arrangement is not strictly symmetrical, the matched vertical forms give it an emphatic balance.

Colour performs much of the persuasive work. Red lettering and label details are set against green glass, leaves and clothing, while the grapes range from fresh green to deep purple. These saturated passages are moderated by the soft background, which shifts gently from warm beige towards light blue. Spatial depth remains deliberately limited: figure, fruit and bottles press forward as a single display, ensuring that nothing distracts from the name, the products or the smiling face connecting them.

Context and significance

Commercial posters of this period had to be read quickly, often amid the competing signs and displays of modern retail. Here, the hierarchy is especially economical. Brand lettering occupies the clear upper field; the human figure supplies warmth and animation; and the bottles command the lower portion. The use of grapes links the beverages to abundance and freshness without requiring a lengthy written message. It is an example of advertising built through visual shorthand rather than explanation.

As an anonymous design, Delhaize (1930–1940) also preserves a kind of creativity frequently left outside conventional histories of fine art: the work of illustrators and commercial designers who shaped everyday visual culture. Its appeal lies in that meeting of practical purpose and decorative intelligence, from the assertive typography to the carefully repeated reds, greens and fruit forms. The result is both a record of interwar consumer marketing and a particularly lively example of vintage beverage advertising.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
