The large bloom occupies the upper centre of the composition, its densely layered pink petals opening above a branching stem of buds and sharply defined foliage. Against the warm, almost blank ground, every ruffled edge, thorn and leaf vein becomes conspicuous. The result is both disciplined and sensuous: a botanical specimen described with precision, yet arranged with the balance and grace of a floral portrait.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, known to contemporaries and later admirers as the “painter of flowers”. His studies were made for aristocratic and scholarly audiences at a time when botanical illustration served several purposes at once: recording plant forms, communicating horticultural knowledge and satisfying a taste for finely observed natural beauty. This rose belongs to the period of his celebrated work on the genus, Les Roses, issued between 1817 and 1824. In such images, scientific scrutiny and decorative refinement are not competing aims; each strengthens the other.
A closer look
The open rose is built from numerous overlapping petals, shaded from near-white blush at the illuminated edges to fuller pink within the folds. These gradual changes in tone give the flower a convincing sense of volume without disturbing the clarity of its outline. Its slightly notched and crinkled petal margins are particularly prominent, an identifying feature also emphasised by the French caption below: “Rosier Centifolia à pétales crenelées.”
Below the flower, the foliage creates a darker, more angular counterweight. Serrated leaves spread laterally from the stem, their central ribs and branching veins traced with exceptionally fine lines. Greens range from cool, pale passages to deeper tones along overlapping edges, allowing individual leaves to remain legible within the cluster. Slender reddish-brown prickles interrupt the stem, introducing a small but telling note of physical toughness beneath the softness of the bloom.
The upper-right branch records the rose in successive stages of development. Compact buds rise from green sepals, with reddish tips hinting at the petals enclosed within; nearby, a more advanced bud begins to loosen. This sequence expands the study beyond a single spectacular flower, showing something of the plant’s growth and structure. Redouté uses the surrounding negative space with equal care: the stem bends through the page without crowding it, while the asymmetrical buds prevent the centred blossom from feeling static.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration demanded an unusual combination of skills. An artist had to preserve the distinguishing structures of a plant while also making a coherent image from leaves, stems and flowers that naturally turn in different directions. Redouté’s solution was to isolate the specimen, suppress incidental setting and use subtle tonal modelling to make each part intelligible. The pale background does not suggest a garden or vase; instead, it gives the rose the concentrated presence of an object under close examination.
Rosa Centifolia Crenata demonstrates why Redouté’s flower studies have endured beyond their original botanical context. The full blossom first commands attention, but prolonged looking reveals the measured progression of buds, the varied leaf edges and the minute thorns along the stem. It is an image in which horticultural observation becomes an art of distinctions—between soft and sharp, open and enclosed, pale petal and dark leaf.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
