Warm orange and red structures gather across the centre of the frame, threaded and partially obscured by deep brown-black forms. Against them, scattered white points and compact pinkish clusters appear exceptionally crisp, particularly towards the upper right.
Located 11 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus, this galaxy is classified in the supplied metadata both as a galaxy of the Local Universe and in relation to its central black hole. The image does not present it as a neat, self-contained form. Instead, Hubble’s view concentrates attention on overlapping luminous regions, shadowed lanes and fine points of light, creating an impression of immense complexity compressed into a closely framed scene.
The palette moves gradually from the quieter, near-black left side towards a more luminous right-hand region. A small trace of blue near centre-left provides a cool counterpoint to the prevailing reds and oranges, while softer grey and pink tones emerge only on closer examination. The result is richly layered rather than uniformly bright: some structures seem to advance sharply from the darkness, while others almost disappear into it.
A closer look
Across the upper edge, narrow dark-brown filaments cut against brighter material. Below them, the central glow breaks into irregular folds of orange, red and white, with dark wisps wrapping around its margins like fissures through illuminated stone. On the far right, a bridge of warm colour carries the eye towards the bright pinkish formations clustered near the corner.
The lower left is markedly more restrained. Sparse white points occupy a predominantly black field, and faint remnants of colour along the bottom edge nearly merge with the background. This emptier area gives the denser centre room to register, while also revealing the image’s smallest details: isolated pinpricks, slight changes in shadow and delicate transitions between black, brown and muted red.
Seen at large scale, the contrast between these regions becomes central to the image’s character. It is not only the brightest structures that hold attention, but the narrow seams and obscured forms between them—details that continually interrupt and reshape the surrounding light.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
