Eugène Burnand’s 1896 poster Catz Elixir, Le Meilleur des Apéritifs, Catz & Zoon Van Pekela, Groningen turns the serving of a drink...
Continua a leggereEugène Burnand’s 1896 poster Catz Elixir, Le Meilleur des Apéritifs, Catz & Zoon Van Pekela, Groningen turns the serving of a drink into a compact theatrical encounter. A woman leans in from the left towards a formally dressed, seated man, who raises a small glass with an expression poised between curiosity and approval. Between them, the table, bottle and glass establish the product at the centre of the exchange, while saturated reds, chestnut browns and touches of gold give the advertisement an immediate warmth.
Created to promote a Dutch aperitif brand, the poster belongs to the lively commercial visual culture of the late nineteenth century, when persuasive lettering and characterful illustration were increasingly combined to make products memorable at a glance. Burnand was a Swiss artist associated with a closely observed realist manner, working across painting and illustration. Here, his attention to facial expression, costume and social gesture gives the advertisement greater narrative substance than a simple display of bottle and brand.
A closer look
The composition is asymmetrical but carefully balanced. The standing woman occupies the upper left, her forward movement directing attention diagonally towards the man on the right. His seated pose is more contained, yet the lifted glass completes her gesture and links the two figures across the intervening table. This arrangement creates a persuasive visual sequence: presentation, consideration and implied enjoyment.
Burnand’s descriptive precision is especially apparent in the clothing. Fine lace-like detailing animates the woman’s dress, while her neatly arranged hair and composed posture contribute to the scene’s air of polished sociability. The man’s dark formal attire provides a weightier mass on the opposite side. Small highlights on the translucent glass and glossy bottle punctuate the deeper tones, ensuring that the advertised drink remains conspicuous without disrupting the human interaction around it.
Typography forms an architectural frame for the scene. “CATZ ELIXIR” commands the upper portion in large lettering, followed by the assertive French slogan “le meilleur des apéritifs”. Below, “Catz & Zoon van Pekela, Groningen” identifies the company and place, while further commercial information runs along the lower edge, including a reference to the concessionaire for Belgium. Decorative borders, flourishes and accent lines contain the pictorial scene and give the poster the dense, finished character of period advertising.
Context and significance
The use of French is significant to the poster’s intended reach. Although the brand was associated with Groningen, the language and Belgian concessionaire details position Catz Elixir within a wider regional market. Rather than communicating through product information alone, the design presents the aperitif as part of a cultivated social ritual. The exchange between the two figures makes consumption appear conversational, courteous and pleasurable—an early example of advertising constructing an atmosphere around a brand rather than merely naming it.
Burnand’s realist instincts are central to the poster’s appeal. The figures are not reduced to flat emblems: their glances, gestures and differing poses create a small but legible drama. At the same time, bold lettering and broad areas of warm colour retain the directness demanded by commercial design. That meeting of pictorial observation and graphic urgency gives Catz Elixir its distinctive character, poised between illustrated narrative and emphatic brand image.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.
We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
