Identified in the catalogue as “Ellet”, the subject is presented not as a rigid specimen but as a compact bouquet: a large golden-yellow bloom occupies the centre, surrounded by pink, crimson, white and purplish-red flowers at differing stages of openness. Against the pale cream ground, each ruffled silhouette remains distinct even as petals, leaves and stems overlap.
Often called the “Raphael of flowers”, Redouté was the leading botanical illustrator of his age. His work belongs to a period in which scientific botany, cultivated gardens and refined book illustration were closely intertwined. Plates such as this were expected to convey the structures of plants with clarity, yet they also addressed an audience attuned to elegance and decorative arrangement. Redouté’s particular achievement lay in reconciling these demands: close observation never feels clinical, while beauty is built from botanical detail rather than imposed upon it.
A closer look
The central yellow flower provides the composition’s brightest point. Its petals shift from deep gold near the densely folded centre to a paler yellow at the outer edges, where the contours become softly frilled. This gradual modulation gives the bloom volume without heaviness. Immediately below and to the left, a pale pink flower offers a gentler counterpoint; fine veins run through its petals, while its cool blush colouring sits beside the deeper, warmer red of a neighbouring bloom.
At the upper right, the arrangement reaches its greatest density in a broad purplish-red flower composed of many layered petals. Its darker mass balances the luminous yellow centre and prevents the bouquet from appearing uniformly delicate. A partially concealed red bloom at the lower right adds another layer, suggesting that the cluster continues behind the foremost flowers. White, softly ruffled petals introduce a quieter interval among the saturated colours.
The green leaves and slender stems are more than supporting details. They pass between the blossoms, separate adjoining colours and give the group an underlying structure. Subtle changes from fresh green to shadowed olive articulate their curved surfaces, while small buds near the upper portion of the plate contrast with the fully opened flowers below. The generous cream-coloured negative space keeps this abundance legible. Along the lower edge, the delicate inscription “Eillet” identifies the subject within the visual language of the botanical plate.

His flowers are carefully differentiated, but they are also choreographed across the page through rhythm, overlap and colour.
This plate is especially revealing in the way it turns variation into its principal theme. Pale and dark blooms, tight buds and open corollas, smooth leaves and frilled petals are brought into a composition that remains orderly without becoming symmetrical. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
