A large, many-petalled bloom occupies the centre, its folds moving from pale blush to deeper pink, while a tighter reddish flower, a green bud and serrated leaves trace a lively vertical rhythm against the light cream ground. The result is abundant without becoming crowded: every thorn, vein and curling petal remains legible.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, earning the epithet the “Raphael of flowers”. His illustrations answered two closely connected interests of the period: the careful description and classification of plants, and the growing appetite for lavishly illustrated flower books. This study exemplifies his ability to reconcile those aims. The rose is botanically particular, retaining the irregularities of stem and foliage, yet its placement is exceptionally poised. Nature has been observed closely, then arranged with the tact of a decorative designer.
A closer look
The fully opened rose forms the visual centre of gravity. Its densely layered petals are not treated as a single pink mass; subtle tonal shifts distinguish the outer petals from the tighter folds towards the heart of the flower. Pale highlights give the upper surfaces a soft luminosity, while fine shadows collect in the recesses, conveying the compact, almost ruffled structure suggested by the name centifolia—“hundred-petalled”.
Above and to the right, the smaller reddish-pink bloom provides a concentrated note of colour. Its more tightly held form contrasts with the expansive central flower, while the pointed green bud at the upper left introduces another stage of growth. Together, bud, partially closed bloom and fully opened rose allow the plant to be read across time as well as across the page. Their asymmetrical placement keeps the arrangement naturalistic rather than diagrammatic.
The foliage rewards equally close attention. Leaves turn at different angles, some facing forward to reveal their branching veins, others slipping behind the flowers and casting restrained shadows. Along the lower stem, small thorns interrupt the smooth contour with sharp, precise accents. At the foot of the composition, the scripted botanical title is followed by the French inscription, “La Centfeuilles prolifère foliacé.” The lettering anchors the specimen without disturbing the generous negative space surrounding it.

Redouté’s reputation rests on precisely this union of empirical observation and cultivated elegance. Botanical illustration had to communicate recognisable plant structures, but in his hands it also became an art of selection: the most informative turn of a leaf, the most revealing overlap of petals, and the exact degree of asymmetry needed to suggest living growth. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
