Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Centifolia Foliacea, dated 1817 and associated with his floral studies of 1817–24, presents the luxuriant centifolia rose as a complete botanical structure rather than an isolated bloom. Two fully opened pink roses occupy the upper centre, their densely layered petals balanced by closed buds, thorned stems and a substantial mass of foliage below. The arrangement rises asymmetrically through a generous pale ground, giving each leaf, bud and flower room to be examined while retaining the poise of a carefully composed floral portrait.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists working in France during the early nineteenth century. His career brought scientific observation into close contact with courtly horticulture and refined publishing; he worked under the patronage of figures including Empress Joséphine, whose interest in cultivated plants formed part of a wider contemporary enthusiasm for botanical collecting. His celebrated rose studies appeared at a moment when horticultural knowledge, classification and decorative taste were deeply intertwined. In Redouté’s hands, the requirements of botanical description did not suppress elegance: accuracy became the basis of the composition.
A closer look
The upper blooms are built from numerous curled and overlapping petals, moving from pale shell pink at their edges to warmer rose and soft red in the folded interiors. Minute tonal transitions give the flowers volume without introducing heavy shadows. One bloom turns slightly outwards, while the other is seen more frontally; this modest shift in angle prevents the pair from becoming symmetrical and reveals different aspects of the flower’s densely packed form.
A cluster of smaller buds occupies the middle of the stem. Their tightly enclosed petals and pointed green sepals create a crisp contrast with the expansive roses above, suggesting several stages of flowering within a single specimen. Slender stems pass between the blossoms and foliage, with tiny thorns clearly marked along their length. These sharp, economical details temper the softness of the petals and remind us that Redouté was recording the plant’s distinctive physical character, not simply arranging an ornamental bouquet.
The lower half is dominated by broad, serrated leaves in layered shades of green. Pale veins branch across their surfaces, while deeper tones collect where one leaf overlaps another. Their weight anchors the composition and establishes a satisfying progression: dense foliage at the base, compact buds in the centre and open flowers above. In the lower margin, the French inscription Rosier à cent feuilles foliacée identifies the subject as a foliated hundred-petalled rose, while Imprimerie de Richemont records the printer.
Context and significance
The centifolia rose—often known in English as the cabbage rose or hundred-petalled rose—was especially suited to Redouté’s method of close visual description. Its abundance of petals demanded subtle gradations rather than emphatic outlines, while its buds, serrated foliage and thorny stems offered contrasting forms and textures. The result belongs equally to botanical documentation and to the long European tradition of flower painting.
What distinguishes this study is the balance it maintains between abundance and restraint. The roses themselves are profuse, but the surrounding space is quiet; the foliage is meticulously articulated, yet never overwhelms the flowers. Redouté allows the specimen’s complexity to unfold gradually, from the fine veins of the lowest leaves to the shadowed folds at the heart of each bloom.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
