The boy’s close-cropped head and blue sailor-style shirt form the calm heart of a composition alive with colour: a green floral cloth, a lustrous red ball, a bright orange and glimpses of patterned furnishings. Rather than treating the room as a precisely described interior, Macke builds it from simplified shapes, emphatic contours and interlocking areas of red, green and blue.
The painting belongs to a decisive period in Macke’s short career, when he was closely associated with Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based circle that became central to German Expressionism. Macke shared the group’s interest in colour as an independent pictorial force, yet his work often retained a distinctive openness and warmth. Here, an ordinary domestic moment becomes an experiment in rhythm and chromatic balance without losing its tenderness: the child remains convincingly engrossed, enclosed within the private world of the book and the objects around him.
A closer look
The figure is placed slightly left of centre, leaning towards the open book so that the bowed head, shoulders and pages form a compact visual unit. The sailor collar introduces a crisp pale accent against the blue shirt, while the face is described economically, with attention concentrated on the downward gaze. This quiet posture acts as a counterweight to the activity elsewhere in the painting. Around the boy, patterns and saturated colours press forward, making the interior feel intimate and densely furnished rather than spacious.
Across the foreground, the green tablecloth is animated by small floral forms in blue and violet. Its decorative surface does more than establish a domestic setting: it breaks the broad tabletop into a lively field of repeated marks. On the right, the red ball and orange create two concentrated circles of warm colour. Their rounded forms stand out against the flatter pattern beneath them, while their highlights give them a surprising sense of weight and sheen.
Smaller details extend the colour rhythm towards the edges. At the left, a partially seen potted plant rises in thick green strokes, punctuated by red flowers. A patterned textile appears near the lower edge, while blue and red forms in the upper right suggest a cushion or another piece of furnishing. Behind the child, darker shapes recede into a shadowed area, providing tonal depth and allowing the brilliantly coloured foreground to appear still more immediate. Visible brushwork prevents the simplified forms from becoming static; the surface remains mobile even where the boy himself is still.

Macke was among the artists who helped give early twentieth-century German painting its new intensity of colour. Although linked to Expressionism and Der Blaue Reiter, he developed a particularly lucid pictorial language, frequently turning scenes of modern life, leisure and domestic experience into carefully organised arrangements of colour. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
