Continua a leggereJohn Woodhouse Audubon’s Lepus negricaudatus, Black-tailed Hare. Male. Natural size. (1845) captures the nineteenth century’s devotion to natural history with an image that is both scientifically precise and poetically composed. Presented in full profile, the hare is rendered with an almost tactile fidelity to fur, posture, and musculature, embodying the Victorian zoological illustration’s goal: to inform as carefully as it delights. The clear species identification and “natural size” notation affirm its documentary rigor, while the poised, dignified stance elevates the animal from specimen to subject.
Offered by The Unique Maps Co. as a museum-quality fine art print, this piece is available on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of sizes, add custom framing and matting, and personalize your print with bespoke captions or dedication plates. Every edition is produced with care for color fidelity and crisp detail, so the nuanced textures and tones of this classic naturalist plate translate beautifully to your wall.
Audubon—an American wildlife artist renowned for his nuanced portrayals of animals—was deeply rooted in the era’s scientific enterprise. A meticulous observer, he brought the same commitment to anatomical truth and lifelike gesture to mammals that his family name made famous in ornithology. Working within the flourishing traditions of nineteenth-century lithography and naturalist art, he helped bridge field study and fine art, ensuring creatures like the black-tailed hare would be recorded with grace and accuracy.
This print’s subject is notable for its clarity of identification: Lepus negricaudatus, the black-tailed hare. The plate’s “Male” and “Natural size” labeling reflects a period when artists and naturalists partnered to create visual records accurate enough for study and comparison. It is an image that operates on two levels—an elegant portrait that invites contemplation, and a scientific illustration that reveals external anatomy, comportment, and habitat cues with exacting care.
The color palette leans into earthy greens, warm orange-browns, and crisp whites, harmonizing the animal with its setting. Precise, controlled strokes articulate the pelt’s directional growth and sheen; delicate highlights along the ears and haunches read as soft, white glints, while the surrounding foliage is modeled in layered greens that feel both soft and verdant. The lithographic approach supports fine tonal transitions and sharp linework, giving the hare a lifelike presence against a clean, balanced ground—an aesthetic that suits both a classic library and a contemporary interior.
A thoughtful gift for natural history enthusiasts, wildlife lovers, scientists, and art collectors alike, this timeless Audubon print makes a distinguished present for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, graduations, or a housewarming. Its blend of scholarship and beauty ensures it will remain a treasured focal point for years to come.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
