Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s Bisquit’s Brandy Lithographic Poster In Colours, created in 1899, turns a commercial advertisement into an elaborate tableau of cultivated pleasure. A woman in a flowing red-toned gown occupies the centre of the tall composition, raising a glass beside a prominently displayed bottle. Around her, grapes, foliage and ornamental lines spread across a deep green field, while touches of gold lend warmth and brilliance. Figure, lettering and product are held together by a decorative structure that is unmistakably Art Nouveau: sinuous but carefully controlled, abundant without becoming disorderly.
The poster belongs to the flourishing visual culture of fin-de-siècle Paris, when colour lithography brought large, vividly designed advertisements into streets and other public settings. Mucha, a Czech artist celebrated for his theatrical and commercial posters, became one of the defining designers of this period. His advertisements rarely relied on blunt product display alone. Instead, they created complete decorative worlds in which graceful figures, stylised plants and distinctive typography gave a brand its own atmosphere. Here, Bisquit’s Brandy is presented not merely as a drink but as an emblem of elegance, sociability and modern luxury.
A closer look
The woman provides the composition with its principal vertical rhythm. Her gown falls in long, gently curving folds, its warm reds standing forward against the cooler green background. Fine contours describe the fabric, while lace-like detail around the sleeves softens the stronger blocks of colour. Her carefully arranged hair and poised gesture bring the human figure into harmony with the poster’s ornament: the curve of an arm, the rim of the raised glass and the surrounding vines all participate in the same flowing visual language.
Above her, clusters of grapes and interlacing foliage form a rich canopy. These natural motifs connect the advertisement to cultivation and harvest while also fulfilling a decorative purpose, filling the upper field with pattern and movement. The image remains characteristically flat, with little conventional shadow or recession. Rather than opening into deep space, its elements sit almost on a single ornamental plane, allowing the green, red and gold palette to carry much of the visual impact.
The bottle at the lower right acts as a compact counterweight to the larger figure. Bright highlights across its glass distinguish its polished surface from the softer fabric and foliage nearby. At the top, the words “BISQUIT’S BRANDY” are set in bold decorative lettering, immediately legible yet integrated into the overall design. A framing border contains the profusion of vines, grapes and fabric, giving the poster the clarity required of public advertising while rewarding closer attention with increasingly delicate detail.
Context and significance
Art Nouveau sought to bring artistic design into everyday modern life, from architecture and furniture to magazines, packaging and posters. Mucha’s work is particularly associated with the movement’s synthesis of figure and ornament. His women are often surrounded by botanical forms, patterned grounds and lettering conceived as part of the composition rather than added afterwards. In Bisquit’s Brandy, this integration is especially effective: the brand name, figure, glass, bottle and grapevine imagery operate as one unified graphic statement.
The poster also reveals how sophisticated late nineteenth-century advertising had become. Its message is delivered through association as much as information: restrained gesture, sumptuous colour and decorative abundance establish the character of the brand before the viewer studies the label. More than a century later, the design remains compelling because its commercial purpose and ornamental invention are inseparable. Mucha gives even the smallest elements—from a glass reflection to a curling tendril—a role within the poster’s elegant visual rhythm.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x20in (90x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
