Behind her, an ornamental disc frames the head like a halo; around her, hops, flowers and patterned borders turn the commercial subject into an elaborate study of line, colour and decorative abundance.
Mucha was a Czech artist working in Paris whose posters became closely associated with the visual culture of the Belle Époque. His breakthrough came through theatrical publicity in the 1890s, after which his distinctive combination of elongated formats, poised female figures, botanical ornament and carefully integrated lettering was widely imitated. Bières de la Meuse belongs to this flourishing culture of illustrated advertising, when the streets of Paris and other European cities became open-air galleries for ambitious graphic design. Rather than treating text and illustration as separate elements, Mucha made them parts of a single ornamental system.
A closer look
The woman’s face forms the still centre of an otherwise flowing design. Her head inclines gently, while the raised glass introduces a compact, practical object into the surrounding arabesques of hair and fabric. Mucha’s contour line moves with unusual fluency: it describes the profile, gathers into curling locks and then travels through the folds of the garment. The figure is sensuous without appearing hurried or theatrical; her measured pose gives the advertisement a ceremonious air.
The palette is built from warm ochres, mellow creams, russet reds and subdued greens. These colours recur across the costume, foliage and architectural ornament, producing unity without flattening the figure into the background. The circular motif behind the head provides a strong geometric counterweight to the body’s curves, while clusters of vegetation soften its edge. Hops are especially apt within this decorative language: their trailing stems and pendant forms identify the advertised drink while also supplying the sinuous natural rhythms favoured by Art Nouveau.
Lettering anchors the composition and announces the brand without disrupting the figure above it. Its broad, emphatic forms contrast with the finer internal patterns and curling outlines elsewhere. Look closely at the changes of scale: large areas of softly modulated colour establish the figure, while smaller motifs enliven the borders and surrounding ornament. Mucha controls this density carefully, leaving sufficient open space around the face and glass for both to remain immediately legible.

Art Nouveau sought to dissolve boundaries between fine art, decoration and everyday design, drawing particularly upon plants, organic growth and the expressive possibilities of the curved line. The illustrated poster was an ideal vehicle for these ideas. It had to communicate quickly in a public setting, yet advances in colour printing and an expanding consumer culture allowed artists to create increasingly sophisticated designs. Mucha’s work demonstrated how persuasive advertising could depend upon atmosphere and visual identity as much as literal description.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
