The plant rises through an expanse of warm cream, its delicate offshoots spreading outwards without disturbing the plate’s striking sense of openness. Rather than filling the page, Redouté uses space to clarify each branching stem and tapered leaf, giving the specimen both botanical precision and an unusually airy elegance.
The plate belongs to Les liliacées, Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century study of lilies and related plants. Often known as the “Raphael of flowers”, Redouté helped establish a botanical language in which close scientific observation and decorative refinement could coexist. His work emerged during an era of sustained interest in identifying, classifying and illustrating the natural world, when botanical publications served as both scholarly resources and objects of visual pleasure. Here, the plant is isolated from habitat and presented for inspection, yet the carefully judged composition prevents it from feeling merely diagrammatic.
A closer look
The principal stem follows the central vertical axis, but its many fine branches keep the arrangement from becoming rigid. Lower down, the foliage gathers more densely around the base, establishing a visual foundation. Above it, the plant becomes progressively lighter and more open: narrow leaves project at varied angles, while the uppermost shoots divide into increasingly slender lines. This gradual transition from fullness to sparseness draws the eye upwards and emphasises the plant’s fine, almost feathery structure.
Colour is applied with considerable restraint. Soft greens describe the stems and foliage, shifting subtly in tone rather than forming a single flat mass. Against them, the small yellow buds appear as measured points of warmth, distributed along the plant rather than concentrated in one dominant bloom. The pale cream ground contributes actively to the composition, allowing even the thinnest green contours to remain legible and giving the entire specimen a luminous clarity.
Close viewing reveals how much variety Redouté finds within an apparently limited subject. Leaves taper to exceptionally fine points; stems overlap and separate in a carefully controlled network; and slight tonal changes help distinguish one shoot from another. At the foot of the plate, the cursive botanical label, including the name Asparagus trichophyllus, anchors the floating specimen in the classificatory purpose of the publication. Its elegant lettering also forms a quiet visual counterpoint to the more irregular rhythms of the plant above.
Context and significance
Redouté’s reputation rests on precisely this reconciliation of information and grace. Botanical illustration required sufficient accuracy for plants to be recognised and compared, but his plates also gave close attention to balance, texture and the expressive possibilities of contour. The soft tonal modelling associated with his printed work produces effects reminiscent of watercolour, particularly in the gentle transitions of green and the understated yellow accents seen here.
Les liliacées, Pl. 30 is especially compelling for what it does not exaggerate. There is no theatrical flower or dense profusion of colour; instead, Redouté builds the composition from branching lines, small buds and generous negative space. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
