The composition is strikingly spare. Set centrally against a pale, almost empty ground, the plant rises in a slender vertical rhythm, while long green leaves curve outwards below like loose ribbons. Redouté’s restrained arrangement gives each element room to be studied without sacrificing the grace of the whole.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical artists working in France at the turn of the nineteenth century. His flower studies belong to a period in which botanical illustration served both scientific enquiry and an increasingly sophisticated culture of natural-history publishing. Close observation was essential, but so too was visual order: a specimen had to be made intelligible on the page. Redouté became particularly admired for reconciling these demands, combining precise descriptions of plant structure with compositions notable for their balance, luminosity and delicacy.
A closer look
The eye is first drawn to the cluster of white flowers at the summit. Their pointed petals radiate around dark centres, producing a lively constellation above the narrow supporting stem. Subtle veining prevents the pale petals from dissolving into the background, while gentle tonal gradations give the blossoms a sense of volume. Some flowers face forward and others turn aside, allowing the cluster to be read not simply as ornament but as a structure occupying space.
Below, the leaves supply the principal movement. They emerge tightly around the base before bending in different directions, their contours alternating between taut lines and softer arcs. Variations from fresh green to subdued olive suggest folded or shadowed surfaces, and a slight sheen along certain leaves adds dimension without disturbing the plate’s quiet tonal range. The generous negative space around these forms makes every change of angle conspicuous.
At the lower edge, Redouté includes details easily missed at first glance. The bulb is shown as a smooth, rounded mass in warm brown and muted green, with a faint shadow lending it weight. Fine fibrous roots spread beneath it in hairlike strands, completing the plant’s anatomy rather than presenting only its more decorative flowers. The labels “Ornithogalum Arabicum” and “Ornithogale d’Arabie” appear below in elegant script, identifying the specimen in Latin and French while maintaining the refinement of the overall design.

Botanical plates of this period occupied a distinctive position between scholarship and art. They recorded identifying features—flower, leaf, stem, bulb and root—yet depended upon careful selection and arrangement to make those features clear. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
