Continuer la lectureLouis Kraemer’s Bock Beer of 1880 turns a familiar drink into a compact piece of visual theatre. A large goat’s head occupies the centre of the vertical composition, its spiralling horns, alert eyes and carefully modelled fur set against a pale, uncluttered ground. Beneath it, the words ‘BOCK BEER’ appear in emphatic decorative serif lettering. The image is direct enough to register at a glance, yet the animal’s expressive features and richly shaded surface give it considerably more character than a simple commercial emblem.
Created in the United States at a time when lithography and chromolithography were transforming printed advertising, Kraemer’s design belongs to an expanding visual culture of consumer goods. Brewers and other manufacturers increasingly relied upon memorable images, strong contrasts and conspicuous lettering to distinguish their products. The goat is especially apt: Bock is also the German word for a male goat, making the animal a long-established visual pun in the promotion of bock beer. Kraemer therefore needed no crowded drinking scene or lengthy slogan—the subject itself identifies the beverage with immediate wit.
A closer look
The goat is presented almost as a portrait sitter. Its head faces forward, held upright so that the horns rise symmetrically on either side before curling back in tightly articulated twists. Fine lines pick out the changing direction of the fur, while deeper brown and grey shadows around the muzzle, eyes and underside of the chin lend the face a substantial, sculptural quality. Small highlights along the forehead and nose sharpen the animal’s alert expression.
This naturalistic modelling is contained within an unusually economical graphic structure. Warm chestnut, ochre and creamy tones dominate the central figure, standing clearly against the light background. The open space surrounding the horns prevents their intricate silhouettes from becoming lost, while the close crop ensures that the goat fills the field without appearing cramped. A faint signature can be discerned towards the upper left, subordinate to the principal motif.
At the bottom, the typography acts almost as a plinth. The broad capitals of ‘BOCK BEER’ are large, evenly spaced and edged by decorative serifs, giving the words weight enough to balance the imposing head above. Illustration and lettering perform separate but complementary tasks: the goat catches the eye, while the unequivocal wording fixes the commercial message. The restrained layout is one reason the design remains so effective; nothing competes with its central joke.
Context and significance
Late nineteenth-century advertising often occupied fertile ground between fine draughtsmanship and mass communication. Images had to be legible quickly, but they could also reward attention through texture, humour and decorative craft. Bock Beer demonstrates that balance particularly well. The nuanced shading of the animal suggests close observation, while the simplified setting and forceful caption anticipate the increasingly concise language of modern poster design.
The warm palette also serves the subject without requiring a literal depiction of a glass or bottle. Browns, oranges and cream recall the colour and richness associated with beer, while the goat supplies a distinctive identity that is both linguistic and pictorial. What begins as an advertisement thus becomes an engaging record of how artists and manufacturers used wit, typography and animal imagery to make commodities memorable in the crowded print culture of the 1880s.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
