Continuer la lectureHenry Jerome Schile’s Bock beer, published in 1883, turns a familiar drink into a buoyant theatrical spectacle. A smiling woman balances above a wooden barrel, raising two brimming beer mugs as a goat rears playfully beside her. Rich reds, warm browns and creamy whites stand out against a pale blue sky, while the large decorative words ‘Bock’ and ‘Beer’ anchor the commotion below. The result is part advertisement, part comic genre scene: immediate enough to catch the eye, yet crowded with small touches of costume, expression and texture.
Schile, an American artist born in 1829, worked at a time when illustrated commercial imagery was becoming increasingly elaborate and visually sophisticated. Rather than presenting beer as a simple commodity, this late nineteenth-century design associates it with sociability, abundance and good humour. Its goat is also more than an eccentric companion: Bock is the German word for a male goat, and the animal became a widely recognisable visual pun in imagery connected with the beer style. Schile makes that association the centre of the composition, giving the advertisement a memorable character before its lettering has even been read.
A closer look
The woman occupies the upper centre of the vertical design, her pose held in an animated, slightly precarious balance. Her head tilts towards the goat, and curling tendrils of hair sharpen the liveliness of her expression. The costume is built from contrasting areas of rich red, soft beige and creamy white, with delicate patterning that rewards closer attention. In either hand she holds a mug, their pale foam rising above the rims and spilling over in small, energetic crests. Bright highlights on the vessels give them a gleaming presence against the softer sky.
To the right, the goat echoes the woman’s upward movement. Its raised posture and finely described coat create a comic partnership between animal and figure, while the slight asymmetry prevents the arrangement from becoming stiff. Both appear to spring from the barrel at lower centre, whose curved staves and dark hoops provide a weighty visual base. Across it appears the German phrase ‘EIN GUTES BIER’—‘a good beer’—turning the barrel itself into part of the message. Wood grain, shadows and carefully articulated edges lend substance to an otherwise fanciful scene.
Typography completes the structure. ‘Bock’ fills the lower left and ‘Beer’ the lower right in bold, ornate serif lettering, balancing the two halves of the composition much as the woman and goat balance above. The lettering is not treated as an afterthought: its heavy decorative forms counter the wispy clouds, curling hair and froth at the top. A soft cream border contains the scene, while the uncluttered pale-blue background leaves ample space around the figures and ensures that their warm colours remain dominant.
Context and significance
Bock beer belongs to a period in which advertising increasingly borrowed the narrative pleasures of popular illustration. Products could be promoted through humour, costume and character rather than through text alone, creating images that were legible at a glance but entertaining enough to hold attention. Schile’s design demonstrates that approach particularly clearly: the drink is never isolated from its imagined social world. Foam, gesture, the inscribed barrel and the mischievous goat all reinforce a single celebratory idea.
What gives the work its continuing interest is the precision with which commercial clarity and visual exuberance are combined. Its message is uncomplicated, but its construction is deft: a strong central silhouette, a warm and limited palette, legible lettering and a pun transformed into character. It remains an engaging document of nineteenth-century beverage culture and of the increasingly polished graphic language through which everyday pleasures were advertised.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
