Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Gallica Caerulea, published in 1817 as part of his work on roses, presents a single flowering stem with exceptional clarity. A fully opened rose occupies the upper centre, its densely layered petals shifting from saturated crimson-pink in the folds to paler tones along their curling edges. Below it, serrated green leaves and a slender thorned stem form a restrained botanical structure, while a smaller bud extends to the right. The generous off-white ground gives each contour room to register.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical painters of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for combining scientific observation with unusual pictorial grace. Often called the “Raphael of flowers”, he worked at a moment when botanical illustration served several audiences at once: naturalists required legible records of plant form, horticultural enthusiasts sought images of cultivated varieties, and collectors valued such plates for their refinement. His rose studies are particularly associated with this meeting of knowledge and connoisseurship. The plant is not treated as a decorative bouquet, but as a specimen whose flower, bud, foliage and stem can each be examined.
A closer look
The open bloom is carefully organised around a small yellow-green centre. Its petals overlap in tight, irregular rings, some turning towards the light and others sinking into deeper red shadow. These tonal transitions give the flower volume without sacrificing the precision of its outline. Rather than presenting an idealised radial symmetry, Redouté records the slight variations that make the blossom appear living: one petal folds sharply, another loosens at the edge, while the outermost layers spread into a broad, soft silhouette.
The foliage provides a firmer counterpoint. Individual leaflets are defined by toothed margins and networks of fine veins, with darker green concentrated near the central ribs. One leaf reaches laterally to the left, gently disrupting the otherwise upright arrangement; on the right, the closed bud repeats the pink of the main flower on a much smaller scale. Subtle thorns appear along the descending stem—minor details, but essential to the rose’s botanical identity and to the plate’s balance between delicacy and exactitude.
Beneath the specimen appears the French name Rosier de Provins à feuilles bleuâtres. The label anchors the elegant composition in the classificatory language of botanical publishing. Its reference to bluish foliage is echoed visually in the cooler, muted passages of green among the leaves, set against the warmer and more emphatic colour of the bloom.
Context and significance
Redouté’s reputation was shaped by his ability to make close observation appear effortless. His studies isolate plants against pale grounds, removing the distractions of garden setting or landscape while retaining a strong sense of growth. In Rosa Gallica Caerulea, the stem rises naturally rather than forming a rigid diagram, and the asymmetrical placement of the bud and leaves gives the specimen a quiet rhythm. Scientific usefulness and decorative poise are not competing qualities here; each strengthens the other.
The plate also belongs to a period of intense European interest in horticulture and the classification of cultivated flowers. Roses offered Redouté an especially rich subject because their identifying structures could be rendered alongside extraordinary variations of petal, colour and form. This example is memorable for the concentrated richness of its single bloom: an intricate field of pink and red held within an otherwise spacious, disciplined composition.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
