Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Alba Regalis, dating from the period 1817–24, presents a royal white rose not as a rigid specimen but as a living branch in several stages of growth. A large, fully opened bloom dominates the upper centre, its petals touched with the palest pink and gathered into a densely folded heart. Two buds rise beside it, while serrated leaves spread below in an asymmetrical arrangement that feels poised rather than diagrammatic. Against the warm, almost empty ground, every contour remains exceptionally clear.
Redouté was among the most admired flower painters of the early nineteenth century, bringing scientific attentiveness and courtly refinement into unusually close accord. His rose studies belong to a period of intense European interest in botany and horticulture, when cultivated varieties were collected, classified and represented for an expanding audience of gardeners and naturalists. Yet his flowers are more than records of identification: their careful spacing, subtle colour and graceful silhouettes give botanical description the composure of portraiture.
A closer look
The principal rose is built from overlapping layers of softly shaded petals. Those at the outer edge open broadly, their tips curling and dipping, while the petals towards the centre become smaller and more tightly compressed. Blush-pink accents collect within the folds, deepening towards muted rose and giving the pale flower volume without recourse to strong shadow. The result is a bloom that appears both full and light, its intricate structure held together by delicately judged tonal transitions.
At the upper right, the two buds extend the study beyond a single perfect moment. One has begun to loosen, revealing pink between the green sepals; the other remains more firmly closed. Their slender forms counterbalance the expansive flower, leading the eye along the stem and across the surrounding foliage. Below, the leaves are rendered in varied greens, with central ribs, branching veins and finely toothed edges clearly distinguished. Fine linear marks around their margins lend them a slightly crisp texture, contrasting with the yielding softness of the petals.
The branch itself provides the composition’s quiet armature. It bends through the pale ground rather than standing strictly upright, and a few small thorns interrupt its smooth green surface. These details are easy to overlook, but they reinforce Redouté’s close observation of the whole plant rather than the flower alone. At the lower edge, the Latin name “Rosa alba Regalis” is paired with the French “Rosier blanc Royal”, linking the cultivated specimen’s botanical identity with its contemporary vernacular name.
Context and significance
Rosa Alba Regalis belongs to the world of Redouté’s celebrated rose studies from the early nineteenth century. His approach reflects a long botanical tradition in which illustration had to communicate recognisable structures, but it also reveals the increasing sophistication of flower imagery as a form of visual culture. Roses were horticultural subjects, scientific specimens and objects of connoisseurship; Redouté addressed all three aspects by combining precise leaf, stem and bud forms with an exceptionally sensitive treatment of colour.
The spacious setting is essential to that achievement. With no garden, vase or decorative border to compete for attention, the branch seems suspended for inspection, while its diagonal movement prevents the plate from feeling static. The flower can be read at once as a particular cultivated rose and as an elegantly composed study of growth—from closed bud to unfolding bloom and full maturity.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
