Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 111, published in 1827, presents a group of ixias as an airy botanical arrangement rather than a tightly gathered bouquet. Slender green stems rise through an expanse of warm cream, branching towards white flowers touched with pink and blue and a brighter cluster of yellow blooms with dark centres. The asymmetry is carefully judged: three pale flowers occupy the upper left, while the denser yellow group settles towards the lower right, balancing delicacy with vivid colour.
Redouté was among the most celebrated flower painters of the early nineteenth century, admired for reconciling botanical precision with an unusually refined sense of design. This plate belongs to Choix des plus belles fleurs, a work created at a time when botany, horticulture and the cultivation of rare plants held great fascination for European audiences. Ixia, a genus of South African flowering plants, offered an especially graceful subject: its narrow leaves and fine, upright stems produce star-like blossoms whose markings reward close observation.
A closer look
The palest flowers appear almost suspended against the open ground. At the top left, white petals are faintly warmed around their pink centres, with delicate veining and gentle tonal shifts preventing the blooms from seeming flat. Lower down, a single white flower carries sharply defined blue markings across its petals. This cool accent is small but visually decisive, interrupting the broader harmony of white, yellow and green.
The yellow ixias form the strongest concentration of colour. Their petals move from clear, luminous yellow towards deeper tones around the dark central markings, giving each flower a crisp radial structure. Some blooms face outward, while others turn at slight angles, allowing Redouté to record changes in profile and form without sacrificing the coherence of the composition. The overlapping blossoms create depth, yet the surrounding space keeps the study light and uncluttered.
Below, long blade-like leaves cross and diverge around the stems. Fine modelling and gradations of green distinguish their edges and surfaces, while the restrained lower captions identify the specimens by number without competing with them. These narrow leaves are more than supporting detail: their sweeping diagonals connect the separated groups of flowers and give the plate its poised, upward rhythm.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period occupied a productive territory between science and art. Such plates needed to communicate characteristic structures clearly, but they could also transform an isolated specimen into a carefully orchestrated page. Redouté’s particular distinction lies in this dual achievement. Petal markings, stems and foliage remain closely observed, while spacing, colour and silhouette are handled with the assurance of a decorative composition.
Plate 111 demonstrates how much visual variety can be drawn from a restrained subject. The open cream field, precise contours and subtle shading make the flowers readily legible, while the contrast between cool blue, soft pink and concentrated yellow gives the study an elegant internal rhythm. It is an image for readers interested not only in ixias and botanical history, but also in the way exact observation can become an art of balance, interval and colour.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
