Continuer la lectureLeonetto Cappiello’s Cognac Albert Robin, created in 1908, turns a beverage advertisement into a piece of concentrated visual theatre. A brilliantly coloured bird perches on a wooden barrel, its scarlet and orange body enlivened by long, golden feathers that flare towards the upper right. Against the nearly unbroken black ground, the creature appears illuminated as if on a stage. Below, the words “COGNAC ALBERT ROBIN” form a firm green base to the composition, balancing the bird’s extravagant movement with blunt typographic clarity.
The poster belongs to the Belle Époque, when illustrated advertising had become an essential feature of modern urban life. Italian-born Cappiello, who developed his career in Paris, was among the designers who transformed the commercial poster in the early twentieth century. Rather than filling the sheet with narrative detail, he favoured a single memorable figure, emphatic colour and a dark or simplified background. The result could be understood at a glance from across a busy street. Here, the product itself is not laboriously explained: the bird, barrel and brand name combine to create an immediate emblem for Albert Robin cognac.
A closer look
The bird dominates the upper part of the vertical design. Its open beak and sharply visible eye give it a spirited, almost performative presence, while the lifted feathers create a strong diagonal that prevents the central arrangement from becoming static. Reds deepen into orange through the body and wings; yellow highlights pick out the crest and tail-like plumes. These heated colours are made especially luminous by the black surrounding space, which removes any distracting setting and isolates the silhouette with remarkable force.
Beneath this display, the barrel introduces a quieter range of brown tones. Curving staves, dark hoops and fine grain lines suggest the weight and texture of wood, while a slight sheen lends the rounded form a sense of volume. The wording “ALBERT ROBIN & CO A COGNAC” is placed directly on the barrel, binding the painted motif to the identity of the producer. A subtle shadow beneath the bird’s feet further anchors the creature to its perch, despite the essentially flat, graphic construction of the poster.
The lower typography performs a different task. Large green capitals announce “COGNAC” and “ALBERT ROBIN” with little ornament, their compact mass countering the irregular outline above. This opposition—flamboyant figure against disciplined lettering, bright colour against black, movement against stability—is central to the design’s effectiveness. A narrow cream border contains the drama without competing with it, while the ample dark space around the bird makes every feather and gesture easier to read.
Context and significance
Cappiello’s approach marked a shift away from the more densely descriptive posters of the nineteenth century. His advertisements often depended upon what might now be called brand recognition: an eccentric figure or highly legible silhouette became inseparable from a commercial name. Such images were designed for an environment crowded with printed notices, where visual economy was not merely stylish but practical. Cognac Albert Robin demonstrates that principle particularly clearly, reducing its message to a handful of forms that remain instantly distinct.
Yet the poster rewards slower looking as well as rapid recognition. The small variations within the bird’s red plumage, the restrained modelling of the barrel and the carefully judged green lettering complicate an apparently simple formula. Cappiello’s achievement lies in making advertising direct without making it visually meagre: this exuberant bird is at once character, colour accent and unforgettable commercial sign.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
