Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, Pl. 47, published in 1805, studies the wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca) with characteristic poise and precision. Rather than presenting the plant as a dense clump of undergrowth, Redouté isolates its principal structures against a pale ground. Fresh green foliage occupies the upper part of the plate, while exposed roots and smaller botanical details extend below, giving the composition both the grace of a flower study and the clarity of a scientific diagram.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, working at the meeting point of natural history, publishing and cultivated taste. His collaborations with scientific and aristocratic circles helped establish a visual language in which accurate observation did not preclude elegance. This plate also belongs to a period of expanding botanical study, when illustrated books allowed plants to be examined, compared and classified beyond the garden or herbarium. Its association with Jean-Jacques Rousseau is especially apt: Rousseau pursued botany seriously in later life and wrote about the subject as an accessible discipline founded on attentive looking.
A closer look
The plate is organised vertically, with generous negative space preserving the individuality of each element. At the upper centre, serrated leaves spread out in a balanced cluster. Their veins are articulated with exceptionally fine lines, while gentle shifts from yellow-green to deeper olive suggest the turning surfaces of the foliage. The leaves overlap without becoming crowded, so their differing angles and shapes remain easy to distinguish.
Below, the emphasis moves from outward display to hidden structure. Earthy brown roots taper into increasingly slender fibres, some reduced to hair-like threads. A concentrated reddish tone around the upper root provides the strongest warm accent in the composition, standing out against the cooler greens above. Soft shading gives these forms a degree of volume, yet the overall presentation remains lucid and uncluttered: every branch, swelling and filament can be followed across the light background.
Smaller studies at the sides interrupt the central axis with subtle changes of scale. A rounded bud or emerging shoot appears at the lower left, its compact form contrasting with the open foliage and branching roots. Such supplementary details are more than decorative additions. By showing the wild strawberry through separate but related parts, Redouté turns a familiar woodland plant into an object of sustained examination.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration of this period had to satisfy several demands at once. It needed to preserve identifying characteristics, communicate structure clearly and remain legible when arranged on the page of a published volume. Redouté’s distinction lies in how naturally he reconciled those requirements. The specimen is exact enough to be instructive, but the measured spacing, restrained palette and carefully graduated colour give it an independent visual rhythm.
The wild strawberry is humble in scale, yet here its leaves and root system receive the concentrated attention more commonly granted to rare or elaborate flowers. That shift in emphasis is part of the plate’s enduring appeal: familiar vegetation becomes newly intricate when removed from its surroundings. Redouté’s study rewards the same kind of close observation that botanical enquiry itself requires, revealing refinement not through ornament, but through the patient description of growth.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
