Seguir leyendoHenri Privat-Livemont’s Tropon Chocolat-Cacao of 1900 transforms an advertisement for chocolate and cocoa into an elaborate Art Nouveau tableau. A flower-crowned woman rises at the centre, her long hair and softly folded gown absorbed into a profusion of pink blossoms and curling green foliage. She holds a steaming bowl above two children, whose upward gestures give the otherwise symmetrical design a lively, almost ceremonial focus. Warm rose tones, cool greens and touches of pale blue stand out against a cream ground, allowing the figures and ornament to read clearly even within the poster’s abundance of detail.
Privat-Livemont was a Belgian artist particularly admired for decorative posters in which graceful female figures, botanical motifs and lettering are conceived as parts of a single design. His work belongs to the flourishing visual culture of the turn-of-the-century European street, when commercial posters had to communicate rapidly while competing for attention in shop windows and on public walls. Art Nouveau proved especially suited to this task: its sinuous contours and stylised natural forms could surround an everyday commodity with a distinctive and memorable identity.
A closer look
The woman’s bowl forms the compositional centre of Tropon Chocolat-Cacao. Wisps of steam rise from it in light, curling trails, echoing both her flowing hair and the tendrils of the surrounding plants. This repetition of curves binds the different elements together: the line of an arm continues into a sleeve, the sleeve into foliage, and the foliage into the broad floral frame. Delicate outlines define individual petals, while the larger areas of pink and green remain smooth and emphatic, giving the design clarity from a distance and intricacy at close range.
Below, the two children create an animated counterpoint to the poised central figure. One appears at the lower left, gazing upwards with hands extended; the other reaches from the lower right, partly entwined with the floral ornament. Their mirrored positions stabilise the composition without making it rigid, since their gestures and expressions differ subtly. Between and around them, the cream background provides valuable breathing space, preventing the dense vegetation from overwhelming the figures.
The upper area opens into pale blue, cloud-like forms, a cooler and more spacious passage above the concentrated pinks and greens below. Around the edges, blossoms project outward yet remain contained by a slender border and a curved decorative element at the base. The small wording in the bottom margin—“Affiches d’Art Privat-Livemont 66, Rue Renkin, 16 Bruxelles”—places the designer’s Brussels address discreetly beneath the principal scene. It is a practical inscription, but its fine scale also reinforces the hierarchy of the poster: figure and colour command attention first, details and lettering follow.
Context and significance
Commercial imagery around 1900 increasingly relied on recognisable artistic personalities and coherent graphic identities rather than text alone. Privat-Livemont’s poster exemplifies that change. The advertised drink is not represented merely as a packaged product; instead, the steaming bowl becomes the centre of an idealised encounter, framed by youth, abundance and decorative nature. The design communicates through silhouette, gesture and colour before any wording is read.
What distinguishes the poster is the discipline beneath its luxuriance. Flowers, hair, fabric, steam and human movement all participate in the same flowing rhythm, while the restrained ground keeps the scene legible. The result is both unmistakably commercial and carefully resolved as graphic art—a particularly eloquent example of how Art Nouveau brought ornament, figure drawing and modern advertising into close alignment.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x20in (90x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
