Seguir leyendoVino ‘Saint-Raphaël’ tónico, reconstituyente… Valence, Drôme, produced by the French printing house Imp. F. Champenois in 1913, places its product at the centre of an unusually direct and energetic advertising design. A single dark glass bottle rises against a brilliant yellow field, framed by curling green grapevines and emphatic red lettering. The palette is limited but forceful: each element remains immediately legible, while the contrast between warm yellow, rich crimson and cool vine green gives the poster its distinctive visual snap.
The work belongs to an era when the commercial poster had become one of the most conspicuous forms of urban visual culture. Printers and designers used saturated colour, enlarged lettering and simplified compositions to make advertisements readable amid the bustle of streets, cafés and shops. Here, the Spanish wording presents Saint-Raphaël as a tónico reconstituyente—a tonic or restorative—reflecting a period in which branded wines were frequently promoted through claims of vigour and recuperation. The printer, Imp. F. Champenois of Paris, was active during the flourishing of French poster design in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
A closer look
The bottle acts as the poster’s visual anchor. Its upright silhouette occupies the central foreground, set apart from the flat background with little reliance on shadow or conventional depth. A white-and-red label interrupts the dark glass, its decorative border and close linework rewarding nearer inspection. A circular red seal provides a second point of emphasis, reinforcing the branding through shape as well as colour.
Above, the name “VINO ‘SAINT-RAPHAËL’” appears in broad red capitals, followed by the promotional phrase “TÓNICO RECONSTITUYENTE”. The words do more than identify the drink: they form a commanding upper register that balances the weight of the bottle below. Elsewhere, more ornate script introduces an official, declarative note. The lower text refers to the product’s legitimacy and to Valence in the Drôme, while the discreet inscription “IMP. F. CHAMPENOIS, PARIS” records the printer at the bottom right.
The grapevine ornament softens this typographic structure without weakening it. Green tendrils curve around the bottle and extend towards the upper corners, leading the eye through the composition rather than merely forming a static border. Small grape motifs repeat at intervals, with subtle variations that prevent the decoration from becoming mechanical. Their organic contours also provide a foil to the rigid bottle and block lettering: cultivated nature, packaged commodity and commercial message are compressed into one tightly controlled plane.
Context and significance
Early twentieth-century beverage advertising often relied on a double appeal. The bottle promised pleasure and refreshment, while the language of tonics and restoration gave the product a quasi-medicinal character. This poster makes that combination especially clear. Its message is assertive, yet the vines, ornamental label and carefully differentiated lettering turn a straightforward advertisement into a decorative composition.
The Spanish text is particularly notable within a design produced by a Parisian printer for a wine associated with Valence, Drôme. It points to the international circulation of French branded goods and their advertising imagery, without sacrificing the product’s geographical identity. More than a century later, the poster remains compelling for the economy of its means: one bottle, three dominant colours, a handful of vine motifs and typography calibrated to be understood almost at a glance.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
