Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Pitcairnia latifolia, published in 1802, presents the plant as a tall, lucid arrangement of strap-like leaves and vivid flowers. From the clustered green foliage rises a slender flowering spike, its elongated red petals touched with pink and small flashes of yellow near their bases. The specimen occupies almost the full height of the composition, while a sequence of delicately rendered floral details runs down the left, giving the stately central form a quieter scientific counterpoint.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical illustrators working in France at the turn of the nineteenth century. Born in 1759, he developed a reputation for images in which close observation and compositional elegance are inseparable: plants are made botanically intelligible without losing their individual grace. This plate belongs to a period when illustrated floras played an increasingly significant role in recording and communicating botanical knowledge. Such works served both the specialist and the cultivated general reader, bringing specimens into view through carefully organised studies of their foliage, flowers and reproductive structures.
A closer look
The composition is built around a strong vertical movement. At the lower centre, long green leaves unfurl in a loose spiral around the stem, overlapping one another without becoming visually dense. Fine veins and subtly darkened edges articulate their surfaces, while restrained tonal shifts suggest the leaves’ bends and folds. Their broad, arching shapes establish the plant’s weight before the eye travels upwards into the more open structure of the flower spike.
Here, colour becomes concentrated. Deep reds soften towards pink at the tips of the petals, and the tapering bracts create a rhythm of pointed forms along the stem. Redouté’s pale, creamy ground is essential to the effect: without landscape, pot or botanical setting, every contour remains distinct. The absence of cast shadows also keeps attention on structure rather than atmosphere, allowing the flowers to appear crisp and almost suspended on the page.
The smaller studies at the left reward closer attention. Separated from the main specimen, individual flower parts are set out in fine lines and restrained colour, with small annotations accompanying them. They reveal that the plate is not merely a floral portrait but an analytical study, moving from the outward appearance of the plant to its component structures. Along the lower edge, the Latin identification “Pitcairnia Latifolia” is paired with the French “Pitcairnie à large feuille”, grounding the elegant display in the classificatory language of botany.
Context and significance
Redouté’s enduring distinction lies in this balance between evidence and ornament. The specimen is isolated and clarified according to the conventions of botanical illustration, yet the arrangement has the visual poise of a carefully considered still life. Negative space separates each leaf and bloom, while the narrow vertical format turns the plant’s natural growth into the organising principle of the entire plate.
Pitcairnia latifolia is especially compelling for the contrast between its broad green foliage and its delicate, flame-like flowering stem. The scientific details at the margin add another register of looking: first the plant is encountered as a complete and striking form, then as a collection of precisely observed parts. It is this double vision—analytical yet decorative—that continues to give Redouté’s botanical work its particular authority.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
