This is a minimalist topographical relief map of Iran, created by The Unique Maps Co. and enhanced with our trademarked Unique 3D process. There are no labels, no roads, and no towns — just the country’s contours, sculpted so that light and shadow pick out high peaks, low valleys, and the sweeping basins that define the Iranian Plateau. It invites you to trace the story of Iran’s landforms with your eyes, following the ridgelines where they gleam and the valleys where shadows settle.

Along the north, the Alborz Mountains rise in a near-continuous arc between the plateau and the Caspian lowlands. Here the contrast is dramatic: a narrow, low-lying coastal plain pressed tight against steep mountain walls whose sharp crests cast long, clean shadows. Near the center of this arc, Mount Damavand stands apart — a solitary cone whose summit catches the light while its broad flanks fall away in deep shade. Westward, the volcanic massifs of Sabalan and Sahand are etched as elevated islands above the surrounding highlands, and the basin of Lake Urmia appears as a subdued depression nestled among them.

To the west and southwest, the Zagros Mountains dominate the scene. In relief, their folded geology becomes unmistakable: countless parallel ridges run like corrugations, each rib catching a highlight while the intervening troughs darken into narrow, sinuous shadows. Look for the great uplifts of Zard Kuh and Dena pushing above the surrounding peaks, and the deeply incised valleys of Lorestan and Bakhtiari cutting across the grain. Farther south, the range tightens as it approaches the sea, where short, steep drainages carve stark lines from crest to coast.

The heart of the country opens into the great interior basins. The Dasht-e Kavir appears as an expansive, subdued surface — broad, low-lying, and pocked with flat-floored depressions that soften in the light. East of it, the Dasht-e Lut reveals an entirely different texture: wind-carved corridors and streamlined ridges (kaluts) run in tight ranks so that alternating bands of brightness and shade show the flow of prevailing winds across the desert floor. Around these basins, isolated massifs and interior ranges — the Karkas and Kuh-e Banan among them — rise like islands, their rims sharp and reflective against the darker basin margins.

Swinging northeast, the land steepens again into the Binalud and Hezar Masjed ranges and on to the Kopet Dag along the frontier, where stark escarpments cast crisp shadows over the piedmont. To the southeast, the Kerman highlands lift the horizon, with mounts such as Hezar and Lalezar throwing broad, scalloped shadows onto the surrounding plateaus and the Sirjan and Rafsanjan basins reading as quiet, low bowls between the heights. Beyond, the Sistan depression and the Hamun basin register as a subtle sag in the land, where drainage dwindles and the light spreads evenly across the flats.

The coasts form the final frame. Along the Persian Gulf, the Khuzestan plain shows up as a wide, level apron, its low relief contrasting with the abrupt rise of the Zagros just inland. Eastward into Hormozgan and the Gulf of Oman, the shoreline narrows into a string of low coastal flats, backstopped by short, rugged ranges that loft quickly from sea level; here the steep facets of foothills face the sun while their lee sides fall into sharp shade, emphasizing how abruptly the mountains meet the water.

Whether you grew up under the long shadow of the Alborz, trekked the corrugated spine of the Zagros, crossed the silent flats of the Dasht-e Kavir, or watched the light rake over the kaluts of the Lut, this piece captures Iran’s geography in pure form. This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). Mi marco estándar es un marco de madera de fresno negro estilo galería. Es simple y tiene un aspecto bastante moderno. Mi marco estándar tiene alrededor de 20 mm (0.8 in) de ancho.
