Read the full product descriptionImprovisation Klamm, 1914 (1916) by Wassily Kandinsky invites you into the pulse of early abstract art at the very moment it shed recognizable subjects for pure feeling. The German word “Klamm” suggests a gorge or ravine, yet Kandinsky handles the theme nonliterally—translating landscape into a music-like arrangement of color, rhythm, and line. Begun on the eve of World War I and later reworked, the painting channels the spiritual and emotional intensity that defined Kandinsky’s search for an inner pictorial language.
This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of the painting, produced with archival pigment inks on acid-free paper or on artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of sizes, with optional framing and matting to suit your space. The Unique Maps Co. can personalize your edition—add a discreet caption, commemorative date, or gift message—and we’re happy to advise on scale, orientation, and frame choices to complement your interior.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) is celebrated as a pioneer of abstraction and a leading voice of the Expressionist movement. A founder of the Blue Rider circle in Munich, he argued that color and form could operate like music—directly stirring the soul. His writings and teaching shaped generations of modern artists, and his paintings from the 1910s show him stepping decisively beyond representation toward a spiritualized, self-sufficient image.
This “Improvisation” belongs to a pivotal series in which Kandinsky pursued spontaneity, intuition, and the sensation of nature rather than its literal depiction. Made during the upheaval surrounding World War I, the work reflects the experimental atmosphere that reshaped European art. The title hints at a ravine’s plunge and echoing walls, but the subject is transfigured into a dynamic field of forces—suggesting the emotional weather of a turbulent age.
The palette is dominated by intense blues alive with energy, sparked by radiant yellows and grounded by passages of green, with strategic flashes of red to heighten contrast. Curving arcs collide with angular vectors; sweeping, translucent brushstrokes meet crisp, assertive lines. These layers create a sense of movement and spatial depth without relying on conventional perspective, guiding the eye in surges and eddies across the surface. Owning this print means living with a landmark of early abstraction—an image that feels both meditative and dramatically alive, capable of anchoring a room or inspiring a creative workspace.
A thoughtful gift for lovers of modern art and design, this print is ideal for Christmas, birthdays, housewarmings, Mother’s or Father’s Day, or to congratulate someone embarking on a new studio or office. It’s a timeless choice for anyone drawn to bold color, expressive gesture, and the origins of nonobjective painting.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
