Seguir leyendoGladstone’s Rum, issued in 1893 by Imp. F. Champenois, condenses its sales pitch into a forceful vertical composition: a smiling woman, an outsized bottle and a field of glowing orange-red. The figure is set slightly off-centre, while the dark glass bottle occupies the visual heart of the poster, held upright so that its label faces squarely forward. Across the upper edge, the name “GLADSTONE’S RUM” announces itself in emphatic capitals; below, the wording “KINGSTON Jamaica” connects the drink directly with its place of origin.
The poster belongs to the flourishing commercial print culture of the Belle Époque, when vividly coloured advertisements for drinks, entertainments and manufactured goods became conspicuous features of urban life. Colour lithography allowed printers to combine saturated hues, crisp lettering and finely modelled figures on a scale suited to public display. Here, the Kingston association does more than supply geographical information: it gives the product a distinctive identity within the international trade in Jamaican rum. The result is advertising designed to be understood at a glance, yet sufficiently decorative to reward a longer look.
A closer look
The woman’s cheerful face and mass of curling hair provide the composition with its human focus. A patterned scarf is tied through her hair, its checked design introducing a small patch of intricate colour beside the broader planes of the background. Her clothing is similarly animated: pale fabric at the neckline is framed by a darker garment scattered with repeating leaf motifs. These details soften the poster’s commercial directness, creating a lively interplay between costume, expression and brand presentation.
The bottle itself is exaggerated in scale, rising prominently through the centre of the design. Warm highlights along the glass give it volume against the relatively flat orange ground, while its brown-black body forms the strongest tonal contrast in the poster. The woman’s clearly articulated hand curls around it, making the act of display unmistakable. Rather than placing the product on a table or within a narrative setting, the design brings bottle and spokesperson into immediate proximity; almost everything extraneous has been removed.
Typography completes the visual hierarchy. The large heading at the top can be read before the smaller details on the label and lower inscription come into focus. Around the central figure, the background remains largely unoccupied, allowing her silhouette, the bottle and the lettering to retain their clarity. A faint border contains the concentrated arrangement. Saturated orange and red supply warmth and visibility, while earthy greens and browns keep the costume and bottle distinct without disturbing the limited palette.
Context and significance
Imp. F. Champenois was part of the highly developed Parisian printing world that helped make the illustrated poster one of the defining visual forms of the late nineteenth century. Such printers united technical expertise with a sophisticated understanding of street-level communication: strong silhouettes, memorable faces and product names large enough to register quickly. In Gladstone’s Rum, these qualities are especially evident in the balance between a personable figure and an uncompromisingly prominent commodity.
The reference to a “celebrated plantation” and to Kingston also reveals how geographical origin was folded into beverage branding. Jamaica is presented not through a landscape, map or harbour view, but through words attached to the bottle and its surrounding publicity. Place becomes part of the label itself. That combination of bold colour, decorative costume and carefully controlled lettering makes the poster an engaging record of how late nineteenth-century advertising transformed a commercial message into a complete graphic identity.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
