Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Gallica Rosea Flore Simplici, dated 1817, presents the Gallic rose (Rosa gallica) as both a botanical specimen and a poised pictorial subject. Two open pink flowers rise from a slender, branching stem: the larger bloom faces forward, exposing a bright constellation of yellow stamens, while a second turns slightly away in the upper left. Against the pale beige ground, the plant’s irregular spread of serrated leaves feels spacious and carefully balanced rather than rigidly diagrammatic.
The study belongs to Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century work on roses, produced during a period in which botanical illustration served scientific classification, horticultural knowledge and cultivated taste at once. Often described as the “painter of flowers”, Redouté brought exceptional clarity to plant anatomy without sacrificing compositional grace. His career was closely connected with elite French botanical culture, including the patronage of Empress Joséphine, whose gardens at Malmaison became renowned for their collections of roses and other rare plants. Here, close observation and decorative refinement are inseparable: the rose is identifiable in its structure, yet arranged with the delicacy of a formal portrait.
A closer look
The principal flower occupies the centre of the composition, its broad petals opening around an emphatic yellow heart. Pink is built through gentle tonal changes rather than a single flat hue: deeper colour gathers in the folds and near the base of the petals, while their edges soften towards blush and near-cream. These subtle transitions give the corolla volume, suggesting the slight cupping, overlap and unevenness of living petals.
Above and to the left, the smaller flower introduces a quieter counterweight. Its angled position prevents the arrangement from becoming strictly symmetrical, while the leaves on the right extend the plant laterally across the page. Their deeper greens and sharply described margins contrast with the softness of the blooms. Fine parallel markings articulate the veins, and delicate shifts from olive to fresh green distinguish upper surfaces, curled edges and shaded undersides.
Small buds and secondary shoots punctuate the stem, broadening the study beyond the flowers at their peak. They suggest successive stages of growth within a single specimen, an important feature of botanical observation as well as a source of visual rhythm. At the lower edge, the French caption identifies the plant as “Rosier de Provins à fleurs roses et simples”, reinforcing the connection between Latin classification, cultivated varieties and familiar horticultural language.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at a moment when European interest in botany was expanding through collecting, garden cultivation and illustrated publications. Botanical plates had to communicate precise distinctions in leaf, stem and flower, but they were also intended to reward prolonged looking. Redouté’s particular achievement lies in the ease with which he reconciled those demands. The restrained background removes the plant from any garden setting, allowing every thorn, vein and petal to be considered clearly, while the asymmetrical branching gives the specimen an unforced, organic presence.
The Gallic rose has a long history in European gardens, and Redouté treats it without theatrical embellishment. Its open, comparatively simple flowers allow the yellow stamens to remain fully visible, making the bloom’s reproductive structure part of the composition’s strongest colour contrast. The result is characteristic of his finest flower studies: exact enough to inform, graceful enough to stand independently, and attentive to details that reveal themselves gradually—from the faintest pink shading to the minute articulation of a leaf’s surface.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
