Seguir leyendoPierre Joseph Redouté’s Epidendrum ciliare (1802–1816), dated 1802, presents the orchid now commonly known as the fringed star orchid with an arresting combination of delicacy and botanical clarity. The plant rises vertically from a small tangle of exposed roots, its smooth green leaves supporting a cluster of pale, attenuated flowers. Against the quiet off-white ground, each part remains distinct: roots, foliage, stem and blossom form a lucid account of the specimen’s structure, while the long, fringed floral segments give the upper half of the composition an almost feathery intricacy.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists working in France during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His flower studies belong to a period in which botanical illustration served both scientific enquiry and an expanding public fascination with natural history. Accuracy was essential, but it did not preclude refinement. Here, the orchid is treated neither as a decorative bouquet nor as an idealised emblem: it is a particular plant, observed closely and arranged so that its identifying characteristics can be studied. The spacious presentation and subtle colour also reveal why Redouté’s work has continued to appeal beyond strictly botanical circles.
A closer look
The composition leads the eye upwards through successive stages of growth. At the lower edge, slender roots spread and overlap in pale brown and greyish tones, providing an earthy counterweight to the flowers above. From this loosely tangled base emerge several broad leaves, their shapes sweeping outwards before turning gently upward. Fine veins and slight variations from muted olive to fresher green prevent the foliage from appearing flat; even small irregularities have been retained, reinforcing the sense of a specimen studied from life rather than a generic ornamental plant.
Higher in the plate, the stems narrow and divide beneath the flower cluster. The blossoms combine creamy white with restrained yellow-green accents, their pointed forms extending in different directions while remaining carefully legible. Especially striking are the hair-like fringes along the elongated floral structures. These minute lines create a lively, almost flickering edge, contrasting with the broad, calm surfaces of the leaves below. The result is a composition balanced between stability and movement: firmly anchored at the root, yet increasingly airy as it ascends.
Redouté’s use of negative space is equally important. The pale background isolates the orchid without making it seem diagrammatic, while faint beige shadowing near the base gives the roots a modest sense of depth. Beneath the specimen, the finely written label “Epidendrum Ciliare” completes the plate with understated precision. Its elegant script belongs to the visual order of the whole, identifying the plant without competing with it.
Context and significance
Botanical plates of this period occupied a productive territory between art and science. They needed to distinguish forms that could be similar at a glance, requiring disciplined attention to leaf shape, flower structure and modes of growth. At the same time, carefully judged spacing and colour made such illustrations objects of cultivated visual pleasure. Redouté was particularly gifted at sustaining both purposes: his plants are clear enough to be examined and graceful enough to command the page.
Epidendrum ciliare exemplifies that union. Its restrained palette allows the orchid’s unusual silhouette to carry the composition, while the close rendering of veins, roots and fringed blossoms rewards prolonged viewing. What first appears to be a serene study gradually reveals an extraordinary variety of edges and textures, from smooth foliage to thread-fine petals—a botanical portrait whose elegance rests upon exact observation.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
