Seguir leyendoHungarian Wines Imported by D.A. Mayer, created in 1877 and credited to Mayer and Merkel & Ottmann Lith., turns a commercial announcement into an exceptionally elaborate pageant of wine, trade and national identity. At its centre, the words “HUNGARIAN WINES” appear in emphatic red lettering, surrounded by a dense framework of barrels, agricultural scenes, celebratory figures and ornamental foliage. Rich reds and greens are set against gold, cream and brown, giving the composition both festive warmth and the visual authority of an official proclamation.
The lithograph belongs to the expanding world of late nineteenth-century trade graphics, when advances in commercial printing allowed businesses to address urban consumers through increasingly ambitious colour and design. Its subject also reflects a widening transatlantic market: Hungarian wine is presented not simply as a beverage, but as an imported speciality carrying the prestige of distant landscapes, established traditions and international recognition. Prominent wording across the top announces the “Highest Premium Awarded Philadelphia 1876”, referring to the International Exhibition held the year before this poster appeared. The claim gives D.A. Mayer’s promotion the weight of public distinction while making the exhibition itself part of the brand’s story.
A closer look
The composition is organised around typography, yet lettering and illustration continually overlap in effect. The large central title commands attention first, its saturated red heightened by green and gold accents. Around it, the lighter ground prevents the densely packed design from becoming visually heavy. Ornate borders create a formal enclosure, but their floral curves also echo the natural growth of vines and help connect the separate vignettes into a continuous decorative scheme.
Across the upper portion, wine barrels and production tools establish the practical foundations of the trade. Careful shading describes the curved staves and rounded volume of the casks, while small medals and award motifs reinforce the poster’s language of quality and distinction. A riverside cityscape appears at the upper right, extending the design beyond the vineyard and cellar towards a broader world of transport and commerce. These smaller scenes give the poster a layered structure: the central message can be grasped immediately, while close viewing reveals an entire visual narrative around it.
The lower corners place people at the heart of that narrative. To the left, figures in patterned traditional dress appear in a lively celebration; to the right, grape-picking connects the finished wine to agricultural labour. Faces, garments and gestures are rendered with surprising specificity for elements that occupy relatively little space. Along the bottom edge, the claim that this is “The Only House in the United States Where Hungarian Wines Are Sold…” completes the sales argument with a promise of exclusivity. Commerce, cultivation and festivity are thus made to support one another.
Context and significance
Trade posters of this period did more than identify a merchant. They constructed an atmosphere around imported goods, using ornament, typography and anecdotal illustration to make unfamiliar products culturally legible and desirable. Here, Hungary is evoked through wine production, costume, landscape and communal celebration, while the Philadelphia award supplies an American point of recognition. The result balances two ideas especially effectively: authenticity rooted in place and prestige confirmed abroad.
What makes the lithograph particularly engaging is its refusal to separate information from spectacle. Bold words deliver the advertisement at a glance, but the surrounding details reward slower attention. It remains a vivid document of nineteenth-century visual marketing—an image in which the bottle’s imagined journey, from vineyard and barrel to international exhibition and American merchant, becomes the advertisement itself.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
