Read the full product descriptionWassily Kandinsky’s Composition in red, blue, green and yellow (1913) captures a breakthrough moment in the birth of nonobjective painting. In 1913—on the cusp of World War I and at the height of the Der Blaue Reiter circle—Kandinsky pursued a new visual language built from pure color, line, and rhythm. The title signals his priorities: the dynamic interplay of primary and secondary hues becomes the subject itself, projecting emotional and spiritual intensity without relying on recognizable objects.
This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of the painting, produced with richly pigmented giclée inks. Choose between acid-free archival paper for a crisp, elegant finish, or artist’s cotton canvas for a textured, gallery-style presence. The Unique Maps Co. can tailor size options to your wall—ranging from intimate formats to bold statement pieces—and provide framing and matting. Personalization touches, from title captions to gift inscriptions, are available on request so you can create a bespoke piece for your space.
About the artist: Born in Moscow in 1866 and active in Munich before the war, Kandinsky helped define early abstraction and articulated its theory in his influential writing on the “spiritual” power of art. He believed colors could act like musical tones, stirring inner responses that transcend literal depiction. His Compositions, created across the 1910s, represent the culmination of this quest—ambitious orchestrations of hue, line, and form.
Why this work matters: Painted in 1913, it belongs to the pivotal years when European modernism embraced full abstraction. Instead of a landscape or figure, the canvas becomes a field of forces—movement, counterpoint, and harmony—where color relationships carry meaning. Its timing on the eve of cataclysm heightens the sense of urgency: a search for universal expression when the old world was about to fracture.
Color, style, and why you’ll love it: With blue as the prevailing note, the composition is animated by incisive black lines, arcs, and diagonals that corral bursts of yellow and red, with green acting as a mediating tone. The brushwork alternates between airy, translucent passages and confidently assertive strokes, creating a syncopated rhythm that feels musical and alive. Hung in a contemporary interior, the print introduces energy and clarity—its blues steady the room, while the yellows and reds add bright counterpoints—making it a striking anchor for modern, minimalist, or mid-century spaces.
A thoughtful gift idea: This Kandinsky print makes a refined present for modern art enthusiasts and design lovers alike—perfect for birthdays, housewarmings, graduations, Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day, or as a memorable gesture for anyone drawn to bold color and the revolutionary spirit of early 20th-century art.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
