Seguir leyendoArachnida Acaridea Pl. 08 (1879) by Frederick DuCane Godman is a refined Victorian zoological illustration from the height of nineteenth-century natural history. Godman, an English naturalist and collector, worked in an era when meticulous images were essential tools for classifying the living world. This plate exemplifies that tradition: a clean, pale field anchors carefully rendered arachnid specimens, each posed for comparison rather than drama, so that structure, pattern, and proportion take center stage. The result is an elegant union of observation and order—science transformed into visual poise.
This listing offers a high-quality fine art print of the plate, produced with museum-grade pigment inks on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. can create this print in a range of sizes to suit your space and offers custom framing, matting, and ready-to-hang options. Personalization is welcomed—add a custom title, a dedication, or a caption to the border—so your piece arrives tailored to your collection or interior.
About the artist: Frederick DuCane Godman (1834–1919) was a leading figure in British natural history, renowned for his expansive collecting, editorial work, and advocacy for detailed scientific illustration. He championed the production of comprehensive natural-history surveys in the late nineteenth century, collaborating with specialists and artists to document biodiversity with rigorous clarity. This plate reflects his commitment to scholarly precision and the visual standards that defined the Victorian scientific image.
Why this subject matters: The Acaridea (mites and related arachnids) are small yet extraordinarily diverse, and plates like this were vital to taxonomy at a time before widespread photography. Each figure is drawn with diagnostic fidelity—the segmentation, the articulation of legs, and the delicate surface markings are all presented to aid identification. Notably, the plate includes labeled species such as Atax septemmaculatus and Limnesia laeta, underscoring the breadth of late-nineteenth-century cataloguing and the drive to map even the most minute corners of natural history.
Style and color: The restrained palette—dominated by white with notes of soft beige and purposeful, vibrant yellows—keeps the viewer’s focus on morphology. Fine, controlled linework delineates form; subtle shadowing lifts the figures from the page; and the patterned yellow-and-dark markings supply crisp visual cues that taxonomists rely upon. Hung in a study, a gallery wall, or a light-filled living room, the piece reads as both scientific artifact and timeless design—its quiet geometry and balanced spacing sit beautifully in contemporary interiors.
As a gift, this print is thoughtful for scientists, nature lovers, teachers, and anyone drawn to Victorian aesthetics—perfect for Christmas, birthdays, Father’s or Mother’s Day, graduations, or a housewarming. It also makes a charming memento for those returning from fieldwork or travels that sparked a new appreciation for the hidden intricacy of the natural world.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
