t-wit-stoopke-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-by-ernest-godfridnon-1908
’t Wit Stoopke Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster by Ernest Godfridnon, 1908

Ernest Godfridnon’s ‘t Wit Stoopke, dated 1908, gathers the warmth and sociability of a Belgian tavern into a compact, vertically organised scene. Men crowd around a wooden table, their bodies overlapping in an animated arrangement of gestures, glances and conversation. At the centre, a smiling figure in a blue jacket extends a glass towards a man in a dark coat and red cap. Russet brown, ochre and warm beige dominate, while small accents of blue, red and green give the gathering a lively visual rhythm.

Classified as a vintage beverage poster, ‘t Wit Stoopke belongs to a period in which commercial imagery frequently drew upon the pleasures of everyday life rather than presenting a product in isolation. Godfridnon, a Belgian artist whose career crossed the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, treats the tavern as a social world: drink is associated with company, familiarity and shared ritual. The Dutch title reinforces the work’s regional character, while its painterly, anecdotal manner places atmosphere and human interaction at the heart of the design.

A closer look

The exchange of the glass provides the composition with its focal action. Light catches its surface and draws attention to the two outstretched hands, turning a modest gesture into the hinge of the scene. Faces and the tabletop form the brightest passages, emerging against the deeper browns of the room. The surrounding men lean and turn towards one another, so that the eye moves in a loose circuit around the gathering rather than settling upon a single formal protagonist.

At the left stands a uniformed soldier with a rifle slung over his shoulder. His relaxed posture and slight smile soften the military detail, absorbing him into the tavern’s easy camaraderie. His cap, marked by a red band, supplies one of the composition’s sharpest colour accents. Across the scene, folds of jackets, bent elbows and partially obscured bodies build depth through close overlap; the sense of space comes less from an expansive interior than from the density of people within it.

The room itself rewards closer inspection. Shelves of bottles in the background establish the setting without competing with the figures, while framed portraits above suggest a long-used, familiar interior. A decorative ceiling lamp occupies the upper-left area, visually answering the illumination across the faces below. Near the lower right, a basket and scattered objects introduce a note of casual disorder, and the chequered floor provides a firmer geometric counterpoint to the irregular cluster around the table.

Context and significance

Belgium at the beginning of the twentieth century possessed a particularly rich culture of posters, illustrated advertisements and public-facing graphic art. Within that setting, ‘t Wit Stoopke is notable for relying on character and narrative rather than stark simplification. Its message is carried by recognisable social types and by the persuasive warmth of the gathering: the beverage belongs to a shared moment, embedded in the habits and surroundings of local life.

What gives Godfridnon’s scene its enduring interest is the balance between promotional directness and close observation. The central glass is easy to find, yet the poster’s real energy lies in the expressions around it—the half-smiles, turned heads and small conversational gestures that make the company feel individual. More than a generic tavern tableau, it is an image of sociability constructed through light, proximity and the simple act of passing a drink from one person to another.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
