metzger-brau-vintage-beer-poster-by-jozsef-diveky-1912
Metzger Bräu Vintage Beer Poster by József Divéky, 1912

József Divéky’s Metzger Bräu. Zürich’s besuchteste Münchner Bierhalle, created around 1912, turns an advertisement for a Zürich beer hall into a piece of exuberant urban theatre. A monumental lidded stein occupies the left of the composition, its dark, reflective body set against glowing orange lettering and a tightly packed company of drinkers. Rather than presenting the venue itself, Divéky concentrates on its social promise: raised glasses, animated faces and fashionable clothes convey a place of conviviality and spectacle.

The lithograph belongs to a period in which illustrated posters had become a defining presence in European city life. Commercial establishments increasingly relied on memorable combinations of image and lettering to distinguish themselves in the crowded streetscape. Divéky, a Hungarian artist born in 1887, gives Metzger Bräu a deliberately theatrical identity. The phrase beneath the scene—“Zürich’s besuchteste Münchner Bierhalle”, or Zürich’s most visited Munich-style beer hall—links a Swiss urban audience with the well-established convivial associations of Bavarian beer-hall culture.

A closer look

The eye is first caught by the stein at centre left, enlarged until it approaches the scale of a figure. Its raised lid introduces a sharp diagonal, while small highlights across its polished surface give weight to an otherwise broadly simplified form. Crossed axes appear as a stylised emblem on its body. This oversized vessel is both product and protagonist: it anchors the composition while the gathering unfolds around it.

Across the right-hand side, figures are arranged at different heights and in varying degrees of finish. A woman in vivid red provides the strongest chromatic accent among the crowd, while a man in a brown coat and another figure in a bowler hat add to the parade of period dress. One reveller lifts a glass; others turn towards one another, their overlapping bodies suggesting conversation and movement. Near the upper right, lightly drawn figures recede into the background, implying a larger company without opening the scene into deep space.

The typography is fully integrated into this bustle. “METZGER BRÄU” arches across the top in substantial orange capitals, competing confidently with the scale of the stein. Below, the smaller white slogan forms a bright horizontal counterweight to the vertical crowd. Orange, scarlet and yellow flare against black and deep brown, producing a forceful hierarchy that would have remained legible at a distance. A narrow dark border contains the energy, while bold outlines and flat colour blocks keep even the liveliest details graphically clear.

Context and significance

Divéky’s design demonstrates how early twentieth-century advertising could sell an atmosphere rather than merely announce a name. The stein identifies the drink immediately, but the people supply the more persuasive message: Metzger Bräu is presented as a fashionable gathering place, crowded enough to feel successful and informal enough to feel welcoming. The claim to be Zürich’s most visited Munich beer hall reinforces that impression through language, transforming popularity itself into an attraction.

What gives the poster its lasting visual character is the tension between caricature-like social observation and disciplined design. Hats, gestures and flashes of clothing distinguish individual patrons, yet every element remains subordinate to the great stein and emphatic lettering. Divéky compresses brand, beverage and audience into one festive tableau—a concise record of the moment when commercial imagery became an especially vivid expression of modern urban leisure.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
