cusenier-oxygenee-vintage-absinthe-poster-1896
Cusenier Oxygénée Vintage Absinthe Poster, 1896

L’Absinthe Cusenier oxygénée, C’est ma santé, created by an anonymous artist in 1896, makes its sales pitch with theatrical assurance. A smiling man in evening dress occupies the foreground, bottle in one hand and glass in the other, caught in the sociable act of pouring. Around him, brilliant green, warm gold and emphatic black give the scene its visual charge, while the product name stretches across the upper register in lettering designed to command attention from a distance.

The poster belongs to the flourishing advertising culture of Belle Époque France, when colour lithography transformed the urban street into a rapidly changing public gallery. Manufacturers increasingly relied upon memorable characters, assertive typography and recognisable colour schemes to distinguish their brands. Here Cusenier’s “oxygenated” absinthe is promoted not merely as a drink but as a modern, healthful commodity. The jaunty slogan “C’est ma santé”—“It’s my health”—condenses that claim into a phrase at once conversational and audacious, reflecting a period in which commercial language could borrow freely from the vocabulary of wellbeing.

A closer look

The gentleman’s black tuxedo provides a strong visual anchor amid the poster’s more exuberant passages. Subtle changes of tone articulate the lapels, collar and bow tie, while his brightly lit face and expansive smile lend the advertisement a genial, almost performative quality. His pose is carefully organised around the act of service: the raised bottle, descending stream and waiting glass create a compact sequence that leads the eye directly towards the advertised drink.

Green is used strategically rather than evenly. It gathers around the bottle and the branding, standing out against the warmer cream, brown and golden hues of the surrounding interior. The background is anything but neutral: swirling ornamental patterns create a richly appointed setting and reinforce the sense of fashionable sociability. Yet the crisp contours and broad areas of colour prevent this decoration from overwhelming the principal figure. The result is depth without sacrificing the immediate legibility required of a street poster.

Smaller details reward closer attention. Near the foreground is a dark, rounded surface bearing the glass and what appears to be the customary spoon and small plate associated with absinthe service. A partly visible newspaper enters along the lower edge, introducing the texture of everyday café life. At the left, the edge of a mirror seems to hold the reflection of a woman, extending the scene beyond the central figure and suggesting a wider social space just outside the frame. These peripheral glimpses turn a direct advertisement into a miniature interior narrative.

Context and significance

Absinthe occupied a conspicuous place in late nineteenth-century French visual culture, associated with cafés, leisure and metropolitan modernity. Commercial posters helped turn its bottles, labels and distinctive green colouring into readily identifiable signs. Cusenier’s campaign adopts that recognisability while adding the language of novelty: the word “oxygénée” presents the drink as an improved, contemporary formulation, and the health slogan supplies an easy-to-remember rationale for choosing it.

Although its designer remains unidentified, the poster demonstrates the sophistication of fin-de-siècle advertising. Text, figure and setting operate as a single persuasive system: the lettering announces, the colour identifies, and the smiling drinker embodies the promised experience. Its appeal now lies partly in that confident fusion of commerce and decoration—a vivid record of an era in which branding was becoming an art of public spectacle.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
