caussa-vintage-wine-poster-by-cristen-1950
Caussa Vintage Wine Poster by Cristen, 1950

Cristen’s Caussa, un vin souple et fin, created around 1950, sets a single wine bottle at the centre of an exuberant arrangement of grapes, vine leaves and radiating colour. The bottle rises against a brilliant yellow field, while deep red fruit and varied greens gather around it in overlapping clusters. Below, the name “CAUSSA” appears in emphatic white capitals across an orange-red ground. The design is immediately legible, yet far from austere: botanical forms, energetic rays and sweeping decorative motifs give the advertisement a lively, almost celebratory rhythm.

The poster belongs to the polished world of post-war French commercial art, when graphic artists translated everyday products into concise and memorable public images. Rather than relying on detailed narrative, Cristen builds recognition through a limited number of forceful elements: the bottle, the grapes and the brand name. The description “un vin souple et fin” — a soft, refined wine — positions Caussa through qualities of taste and texture, while the visual language communicates abundance, freshness and confidence. It is a characteristic example of advertising design becoming an art of compression, turning a product identity into a bold encounter of lettering, colour and form.

A closer look

The bottle provides the poster’s strong vertical axis, its dark, polished silhouette standing out sharply against the luminous background. Its label repeats the Caussa name and includes the notation “11°”, with smaller typographic details and a seal lending the central object an air of specificity. Yellow rays spread outwards from behind it, functioning like a graphic spotlight. These pointed forms break up the surrounding space and prevent the upright bottle from feeling static.

In the upper left, a substantial cluster of dark red grapes is interwoven with broad green leaves. Highlights on the fruit suggest glossy skins, while gentle shading and subtle variations of green give the foliage more volume than the poster’s otherwise flat expanses of colour. Smaller grapes and leaves press towards the upper-right edge, extending the composition beyond a simple central display. The asymmetry is carefully controlled: the fruit provides visual weight on one side, countered by the bottle and the movement of the decorative forms around it.

Typography establishes a second, horizontal structure across the lower section. The broad white letters of “CAUSSA” are designed to be read instantly, their clean forms intensified by the orange-red field beneath them. A more fluid script reading “Les Grandes Caves de Lyon” introduces a contrasting note of elegance. The shift from assertive capitals to cursive lettering allows the poster to speak in two registers at once: brand recognition first, refinement second.

Context and significance

French advertising in the years following the Second World War frequently employed strong colour blocking, simplified imagery and carefully orchestrated typography to address an expanding consumer culture. Cristen’s design reflects that visual confidence without abandoning traditional associations of wine with the vine itself. Grapes and leaves establish the product’s agricultural origins, but they are reorganised into a distinctly modern commercial composition, subordinated to clarity, speed and impact.

What makes Caussa, un vin souple et fin particularly engaging is this meeting of natural abundance and graphic discipline. The grapes retain their rounded, succulent character; the leaves carry traces of light and modelling; yet everything ultimately serves the poster’s crisp hierarchy. From the radiant bottle to the oversized brand name, Cristen transforms a straightforward wine advertisement into a compact study in post-war colour, persuasion and visual wit.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
