tibi-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-1920
Tibi Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster, 1920

Buvez du Tibi, created by the Belgian artist and maker Litho Myncke in 1920, turns a convivial bar-room exchange into a brisk piece of beverage advertising. Three figures gather before a counter: at the centre, a woman in a brilliant red dress raises a glass between two attentive men, one wrapped in blue with a red scarf, the other leaning forward beneath a bowler hat with cane in hand. Warm yellow, scarlet and deep brown dominate the tightly packed scene, giving it the immediacy of a theatrical encounter glimpsed through a café doorway.

Produced just after the First World War, the poster belongs to a period when lithographic advertising occupied a conspicuous place in urban visual culture. Commercial messages needed to register quickly amid busy streets, shopfronts and entertainment districts, and Buvez du Tibi does so through emphatic colour, an easily understood social scene and direct French-language commands. Its principal slogan—“BUVEZ DU TIBI”, or “Drink Tibi”—is less an explanation than an instruction, while the lower cry of “A VOTRE SANTE!! TIBI!!” turns the advertisement into a public toast: “To your health!”

A closer look

The composition is constructed around the woman’s red dress, which forms the strongest uninterrupted field of colour. The folds of the skirt introduce movement into an otherwise compact grouping, while the raised glass provides a small but decisive focal point. On the left, the blue-coated man supplies a cool counterweight to the surrounding reds and ochres. Opposite him, the bowler-hatted figure bends towards the conversation, his long coat and slender cane creating a darker, more angular silhouette.

Behind them, bottles marked “TIBI” line the bar shelf, repeating the product name within the illustrated world as well as in the poster’s lettering. This repetition is central to the design’s persuasive rhythm: the eye encounters the name above the scene, among the bottles and again in the toast below. The figures therefore appear not merely to display the drink but to enact its social appeal, presenting it as part of conversation, leisure and sociability.

Several smaller devices lend the scene surprising depth. A chequered floor recedes beneath the figures, its alternating warm tones energising the lower portion of the design. Bright highlights sharpen faces, glasses and areas of clothing, while darker passages collect around hems and shoes. The background remains comparatively soft, allowing the sharply defined figures and lettering to command attention. At the lower right, the visible credit “LITHO MYNCKE & BRUXELLES” anchors the design in its Belgian commercial setting.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century beverage posters frequently associated their products with recognisable rituals rather than presenting a bottle in isolation. Here, the persuasive argument is entirely social: three distinct characters, animated expressions and a shared drink create a miniature narrative that can be grasped almost instantly. The poster’s close crop intensifies that effect. There is little empty space and no distant view; everything is concentrated upon gesture, conversation and brand recognition.

The design also demonstrates how commercial lithography could combine practical clarity with visual invention. Broad areas of flat colour make the figures legible from a distance, yet details such as the woman’s drapery, the men’s contrasting costumes, the cane and the patterned floor reward closer attention. Buvez du Tibi remains especially engaging because its sales message is inseparable from its lively character study: a concise advertisement staged as an exuberant moment of public sociability.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
