peter-schemm-and-son-vintage-lager-beer-poster-1901
Peter Schemm and Son Vintage Lager Beer Poster, 1901

Peter Schemm and Son, standard lager beer, Philadelphia, created by Avil Prt'g Co. in 1901, combines beverage advertising, architectural portraiture and calendar design in one densely orchestrated composition. At its centre stands the brewery itself, a substantial complex of warm pink and beige buildings punctuated by rows of windows, steep rooflines and a tall chimney. Around it, a brilliant fan of international flags turns the industrial premises into the focal point of a colourful ceremonial display, while an American eagle spreads its wings above.

The poster belongs to a period when advertisers frequently presented the place of production as part of a company’s identity. Rather than concentrating upon a bottle or drinking scene, this design foregrounds the brewery’s scale, solidity and recognisable architecture. Its calendar for 1902 also gave the advertisement an everyday function, allowing the brewer’s name and buildings to remain in view long after 1901. The result is both promotional and informational: a year-long advertisement framed by the visual language of civic pride, international commerce and established tradition.

A closer look

The eye is first caught by the forceful word “Standard” at the top, set in a decorative serif style and followed by the ornate lettering of “Peter Schemm and Son. Philadelphia.” Beneath the name, the eagle forms a strong horizontal accent, its extended wings bridging the upper section of the design. The surrounding standards rise and overlap in a near-circular arrangement, their reds, blues, yellows and greens sharply defined against the quiet beige ground. Stripes, crosses, stars and heraldic devices give each flag an individual rhythm, yet together they create a single radiating frame.

The central brewery is handled in softer tones than the flags, allowing its minute architectural details to emerge gradually. Windows repeat across the façades; chimneys and decorative roof forms break the skyline; pale highlights suggest sunlight striking the buildings. The flags appear almost theatrical by comparison, their folded edges and subtle shadows producing a layered canopy around the more measured geometry of the complex.

Smaller scenes occupy the lower corners. At the left, another building is accompanied by a horse and carriage, a modest detail that places the architecture within the street life of its period. A second structure balances it on the right. Between them sits the 1902 calendar, its orderly grid contrasting with the exuberance above. Below, the caption “THE STANDARDS AND COLOURS OF THE PRINCIPAL NATIONS OF THE WORLD” clarifies the design’s encyclopaedic conceit: the flags are not merely decoration, but a named collection presented for recognition and comparison.

Context and significance

Turn-of-the-century advertising often had to achieve several things at once: establish a brand name, hold the eye at a distance and reward repeated close looking. Here, bold typography and saturated colour perform the first tasks, while the array of flags, the intricate eagle and the finely articulated buildings supply the detail. The juxtaposition is revealing. Modern industrial production is represented through the brewery’s scale, but its commercial message is wrapped in older emblems of national identity and heraldic display.

The poster’s appeal lies in this unusual balance of spectacle and practical order. Flags surge around the brewery, yet the architecture and calendar remain precisely organised; decorative abundance is anchored by a functional grid. It is a vivid example of early twentieth-century beverage advertising in which a company’s premises, location and public image were made inseparable.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
