advokaat-vintage-liqueur-poster-by-armand-rassenfosse-1910
Advokaat Vintage Liqueur Poster by Armand Rassenfosse, 1910

Armand Rassenfosse’s Advokaat, dating from around 1910 and catalogued more broadly to 1910–20, turns an advertisement for the Hasselt drink into an elegant encounter between figure and lettering. On the right, a fashionably bobbed woman in a flowing orange gown raises a small glass; opposite her, the word “ADVOKAAT” spreads across the poster in emphatic black capitals. Cream, rust, yellow and deep brown give the design a warm, concentrated palette, while the asymmetrical arrangement allows the poised figure and oversized typography to command equal attention.

Rassenfosse was a Belgian artist known for printmaking, illustration and graphic design, particularly for his refined draughtsmanship and decorative treatment of the human figure. This poster belongs to a period in which the sinuous contours and ornament associated with late Art Nouveau were giving way to the more direct visual language of twentieth-century advertising. Its place of origin is also significant: Hasselt was closely associated with Belgian distilling, and the line “Edg. Vliegen Distillerie La Rose, HASSELT” identifies the producer within that established local culture. Here, commercial information is not separated from the illustration but incorporated into a carefully staged composition.

A closer look

The woman’s dress supplies the poster’s most expansive field of colour. Its orange ground shifts through muted red and ochre, enlivened by floral ornament and fine contour lines that follow the fall of the fabric. Her pale face, dark bob and exposed arms stand out against these warmer tones. The small glass held in one hand catches a delicate highlight, making the advertised drink part of her gesture rather than merely an object placed beside her. Her composed expression and upright bearing lend the scene an air of fashionable assurance.

Across the left half, the typography establishes a second, bolder rhythm. “ADVOKAAT” is set in a large serif face whose dark letterforms contrast sharply with the light ground. Immediately below, the French phrase “garanti pur oeufs et sucre” — guaranteed pure eggs and sugar — states the drink’s defining ingredients with characteristic advertising economy. In the upper-left corner, a hand presents a bottle and glass, a compact visual demonstration that echoes the woman’s pose. The resulting diagonal exchange, from the serving hand above to the raised glass at right, animates an otherwise deliberately flat design.

Smaller lettering gathers towards the lower portion of the poster, where the distillery name and Hasselt location provide the practical details. These lines are visually subordinate but carefully integrated, leaving the principal word, figure and drink to register first. A narrow dark border contains the arrangement, while restrained decorative linework softens the transitions between text and illustration. Even the floral motifs of the gown contribute to the graphic hierarchy: intricate at close range, they resolve into a broad sweep of orange when seen from a distance.

Context and significance

Advocaat is an egg-based liqueur, and Rassenfosse’s poster communicates its richness indirectly through colour, dress and social presentation. Rather than concentrating on ingredients or production, the design associates the beverage with modern elegance and cultivated leisure. This was a central strength of early commercial poster art: a product could be made memorable through a single figure, a limited palette and lettering legible at a glance.

The poster also reveals Rassenfosse’s ability to balance decorative refinement with advertising clarity. The woman retains the supple line and patterned surface of turn-of-the-century illustration, while the assertive type and simplified blocks of colour anticipate a sharper graphic modernity. The result is both distinctly of its era and unusually disciplined—a persuasive study in how fashion, typography and gesture can make a local distillery’s name visually immediate.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
