Two figures and a pair of oxen introduce a modest note of rural labour, while distant sails, mountains and softly rising clouds extend the landscape far beyond them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAivazovsky was celebrated throughout the nineteenth century for marine painting, particularly for his command of changing light, open water and atmospheric distance. Born in Feodosia in Crimea, he developed an enduring artistic relationship with the Black Sea. Here, however, the sea is not the overwhelming protagonist found in many of his storm scenes. It appears gradually, reached through a cultivated coastal landscape in which road, vegetation and human activity mediate between the near ground and the horizon. Above them, the bright sky occupies much of the upper half of the painting. Soft clouds gather towards the left, their warm cream tones merging almost imperceptibly with the coastal haze.
