st-nicolas-de-port-vintage-beer-poster-by-marcellin-auzolle-1933
St. Nicolas de Port Vintage Beer Poster by Marcellin Auzolle, 1933

Marcellin Auzolle’s Bière St. Nicolas de Port, dated 1933, gives its advertised beer an unforgettable herald: an enormous scarlet rooster balanced on the rim of a glass of amber liquid. Set against an almost unbroken black ground, bird and glass appear with theatrical immediacy. The rooster’s angular silhouette, raised tail and alert eye supply movement to an otherwise tightly concentrated composition, while the vessel below acts as both perch and visual anchor.

Auzolle was a French artist associated with the development of illustrated commercial advertising, in which products were increasingly given distinctive visual identities rather than presented through text alone. This poster retains the directness demanded by display in streets and shopfronts: a single emblematic creature, a limited palette and lettering large enough to register quickly. Yet its effectiveness depends on more than simplicity. By exaggerating the scale of the rooster and isolating it in darkness, Auzolle turns a beverage advertisement into a concise piece of graphic theatre.

A closer look

The rooster dominates the upper half of the design. Its plumage moves through vivid reds, vermilion and darker rust tones, with individual feathers picked out by economical internal lines. The crest, beak and bright eye sharpen the head into a compact focal point, while the fanned tail forms a broader, more decorative counterweight. A crisp outer contour keeps the bird legible against the black field, but the subtle variations within its feathers prevent it from becoming a merely flat silhouette.

Below, the rounded glass introduces a different visual language. Vertical ridges and pale highlights suggest a glossy, reflective surface, and the warm amber beer appears almost luminous against the surrounding darkness. The contrast between the rooster’s pointed claws and the smooth curve of the rim adds a note of precarious energy: the bird seems poised rather than settled. Condensation-like marks and reflected glints give the vessel a tactile presence without disturbing the poster’s broad, simplified structure.

Across the bottom, the name of the beer is stated in substantial yellow lettering. Its warm colour connects the typography to the drink above, while a slight shadow helps the words stand clear of the black background. The text forms a firm horizontal base beneath the livelier shapes of bird and glass. A smaller artist’s mark at the upper left is easy to overlook, tucked into the negative space rather than competing with the central motif.

Context and significance

By the early twentieth century, the commercial poster had become a highly refined form of public communication. Its designers needed to compress subject, brand and mood into images capable of being understood at a glance. Bière St. Nicolas de Port demonstrates that economy particularly well. There is no interior, drinking scene or elaborate narrative; instead, Auzolle relies on scale, colour contrast and a memorable animal presence to make the product name stick.

The result belongs equally to advertising history and graphic art. Its black ground is unusually emphatic, allowing the red rooster, golden lettering and amber glass to operate almost like illuminated signs. What remains compelling is the tension between descriptive detail and bold reduction: feathers, reflections and ridges reward closer inspection, while the overall design retains the instant clarity required of a poster.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
