feigenspan-s-finest-vintage-beer-poster-by-herman-bartsch-1887
Feigenspan’s Finest Vintage Beer Poster by Herman Bartsch, 1887

Herman Bartsch’s Feigenspan’s Finest on Draught Today, created in 1887, turns a direct announcement for beer into an elaborate feat of late nineteenth-century graphic design. Against a deep black ground, the brewer’s name fills an ornate central oval in curling, brightly highlighted letters. Gold, green, warm orange and white create an emphatic hierarchy: first the brand, then the promise of availability “TO DAY”, and finally the brewery and its Newark, New Jersey location. The result is both decorative and remarkably immediate.

The design belongs to a period when American breweries and other businesses were making increasing use of colourful commercial posters and trade cards. Such advertising had to succeed in busy public settings, where legibility and memorability mattered as much as ornament. Bartsch answers that challenge by combining the richness associated with Victorian display lettering with the clarity of a modern brand mark. The poster is not merely informative; it demonstrates how commercial art was becoming woven into the visual culture of American streets, shops and drinking establishments.

A closer look

The composition is tightly organised around the large oval at its centre. Vine-like motifs trace its edge, enclosing “Feigenspan’s Finest” as though the words were an emblem or painted sign. Subtle gradations within the lettering give the characters a raised, almost sculptural presence, while fine curls and flourishes soften the otherwise forceful typography. The near-symmetry of the arrangement lends authority to the message, yet the surrounding details prevent it from becoming rigid.

At the upper left, a small hand holds up a glass. Shading within the vessel gives this compact illustration an unexpected degree of volume, introducing a recognisable human gesture into an overwhelmingly typographic design. Below, two carefully delineated stalks of wheat occupy the lower left, while floral and curling botanical forms gather towards the opposite side. These references to plant life connect the brewery’s identity with its ingredients without interrupting the central message.

The lower portion becomes increasingly direct. “BREWERY” appears prominently in white, and the emphatic “TO DAY” is enlarged so that the advertisement communicates urgency even at a distance. Smaller, plainer lettering gives “NEWARK, N.J.” as the location, providing a sober counterpoint to the exuberance above. Across the poster, the black field performs an essential role: it allows pale contours, warm highlights and green ornament to stand out with exceptional crispness, creating depth from a fundamentally flat arrangement.

Context and significance

Late Victorian advertising frequently dissolved the boundary between information and decoration. Display type could behave like illustration, while borders, plants, vessels and flourishes reinforced a product’s identity. Bartsch’s design is a particularly concentrated example of that approach. Almost every element serves the name Feigenspan, whether by framing it, pointing towards it or establishing an association with brewing. Even the oval format contributes to the impression of a self-contained trademark.

Seen today, the poster offers more than a record of a beverage brand. It reveals an era in which typography was expected to carry mood, status and character as well as words. Bartsch’s balance of ornate lettering, botanical detail and stark tonal contrast gives the advertisement a visual authority that remains legible long after its original, immediate message—beer available “TO DAY”—has passed into history.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
